Lost keys to exterior storage panels (Keycodes available?)
Hello all, and happy holidays,
This evening when trying to do some cleaning i realized i have lost the locking exterior storage panel key on my 06 jayflight travel trailer.
I am trying to do my due diligence before approaching the locksmith on wednesday for a custom key to be made, and i remember last time i had to have a key made from scratch for a motorcycle it cost me quite a bit @ $80.00 for the expertise of having one made without having a key to copy from.
I suppose my question is, are keycodes available for these particular locks? I know a locksmith might be more apt to know by looking than by me asking over the internet.
The only good side of this issue is that, having made copies of the actual door key, there are some codes on that particular key that may help the locksmith partially in obtaining the correct key code, should I mention those? Would they happen to coinside, or is it even a key code thats imprinted on these non OEM key's i've had made?
FWIW the alphanumeric code on the key reads: "1617 FIC1"
Keeping in mind, this front door key does not open the locks of the exterior storage panels but it does however fit inside the trim, and both the keys are small like the size of a post office key so it leads me to believe that they are of the same "code" sorry im not a locksmith forgive the impeccable jargon.
Should I be worried? Has anyone had to have this done before? I just dont want to find out I cannot have a duplicate made.

If you are referring to the key(s) for the outside storage doors (pass thru, etc.), check with your RV dealership (or a buddy with a RV) because those particular keys/locks are common with many RV manufactures. Many folks change those locks out because of the fact the same exact key was used by many manufactures....., at least they did a few years back..., worth a try anyways.
Also, a call to Jayco with your TT VIN may be of help as well.
Hope this helps
Bob

Go borrow a key from your neighbor. Every trailer uses the CH75 key.. LOL

The common keys I have seen are the CH751 and the CH701... The storage door most often uses the CH751 key.
I always carry my spares keys in my truck glove box. My truck has the door push-button entry lock so I am pretty assured I can gain access to the truck if I have misplaced my keys.
All of your neighbor campers should have one of those two keys....
I had trouble finding a local locksmith that had the blanks for the trailer main door on my 5th wheel. Had to go where the dealer gets their keys made. The WALMARTS and LOWES didnt carry those key blanks either.
My truck wont allow me to electronically lock its doors if there is a key left in the ignition. I used to go start my truck to get some heat in it before leaving the house and thump the door locked with the motor running and come back inside the house. It wont let me do that anymore hehe...

I bought about a half-dozen 751 keys off ebay. Now I've got plenty of spares. Your local RV parts place may have replacements for sale also.

There are many replacement locks to choose from.
On my previous trailer, I replaced the CH751 with Barrel Locks. These are OK, but the key cannot be removed while the lock is in the OPEN position.
I've seen some folks use this locks. I like the combination lock for the fact you don't have to carry another key. All you have to do is remember the combination.

we can remove our dining table seats and get access to inside the storage area thus unscrewing the cam to remove the lock (had to do this once). CW sells replacement locks standard keys and barrell type.

Hmm replacing the whole lock is not a bad idea, if removing the cam is as easy as described.
Honestly the best scenario IMO would be to get a replacement made (even if it is likely the same as many other locks out there) but I do not want to be charged $80 from a locksmith to have him custom etch a key that is readily obtainable.
I do not have a dealer per say, because this trailer was purchased at auction, but i suppose any dealer should be able to furnish me with a blank (or mabye even etched) if i provide the TT VIN as stated above?

I seen them on Ebay. Order 10 for $10 and throw some in your glove box.
Best regards,
Doug

Seen them on ebay Pre-cut? If so that would be STUPENDOUS and i'd easily take the $10 gamble before i shell out the $100 to the smith, he charged me 80 to make the motorcycle key from scratch and i told myself i'd never lose an important key like that again but alas here we are.

Hey guys I looked on ebay and couldnt come up with anything, found this site here with them for $1 each (for the 751 key) but im still not 100% positive that the key is the right type.
http://www.race-mart.com/Bargman-BAR-60-10-093.html
Does the keycode that I have from my door key correspond to the lock? or is there any way to find out?
I dont see any "CH XXXX" or any related numbers on the DOOR key, that doesnt necessarily mean the storage compartments are the same code, but i jst dont want to buy 10 keys of the wrong type. Pretty big gamble whether im sure or not as theres always the possibility they're the wrong ones.

The key on the normal door will have nothing to do with the storage compartment lock. 99% chance your compartments are the standard CH751 like has been posted.
Look at this for ebay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40 Yes, the price is a bit higher than what you posted, but you aren't paying $11 Shipping like in the link you posted.

Believe it or not Chevy used to have eight key paterns for all their trucks.
I opened lots of vehicles for people that locked their keys in their vehicle.
I had six Chevy keys for work and could open sixty percent of the vehicles.

If you have any friends with trailers then just try their keys in the storage compartments. It worked with my keys on a Forest River unit last year as a friend has a habit of losing his keys.
