I guess it's a personal preference thing
I think the newer trailers look ungainly and unstable so high off the ground! And like a NASCAR, even my 4WD F150 pickup has an airdam under the front bumper to help keep turbulent and restrictive airflow from passing under the vehicle. As far as dragging the ground on sharp inclines, etc, my old Prowler was longer from the axle to the rear bumper, and although it was at least 6" lower, I never had a serious problem with that. My dad bought a new 24' Road Ranger in '88 and he underslung it first thing after he got it. He didn't have any clearance problems, but as he and the trailer are both gone now, I don't know if he modified his wheel wells or not! It's not too big a job...I may just have to try it and go find a bumpy road to see if it's a problem!😃
