lowering spare tire question

how do y'all lower ur spare tire with trailer hooked up?
F-150 has a tool u need to insert thru bumper to lower tire;
haven't checked, but is there enough room between back of bumper &
trailer to insert the tool?

may have to get another spare tire lowering tool from salvage yard & modify it to work with ratchet?

thanks

I don't have your model but I did have a spare on a winder lift on one of my cars and when I needed it YEP rusted in place, pry bar, etc. to get it down.

So my advice is to lube it and check it from time to time as part of your regular routine. Lower it and check that it will come down, check pressure, lube up the parts and run it back up.

I was driving a sick friends rig years back home and had a flat on the truck. I could not find the key to unlock the spare tire crank. Limped into a tire shop and neither could they. I ended up having to buy a used tire to get his rig home.

He had hid it real good!

The trailer tongue is probably going to be in the way of lowering the spare, the way the lug wrench is used to do it. We have an F150 also.

I had a flat while towing once. It was a rear tire and I did not want to lift all that extra weight with the factory jack so it didn't even cross my mind to attempt to drop the tire while still attached.

You may need to have the TT angled somewhat to the TT in order to have enough room to use the tool that lowers the spare.

To answer the OP's question, yes, there is enough room to access the spare tire winder with your trailer hooked up. I had a flat on the LR of my F150 last fall while towing my rig to my "Snowbird" spot in TX. You use your truck's door/ignition key to unlock the access hole (located under the flap above your rear license plate). You assemble three sections of the jack crank, insert it through the hole above the license plate and guide it into the receiver above the spare tire. Then crank down the spare.

Be careful, though, and have a spare key handy. My key is still stuck in the lock plug. Obviously, I didn't replace the plug in the hole with my key stuck in it. Oh, and take a picture (with your phone) of the jack box with the jack in it BEFORE you remove the jack. Use the picture as a guide when you put the jack back in the box. IT'S A BEAR! and the box won't close if everything isn't in its correct location!

Best of luck, and hope you never have to use your TV spare while towing.
