Traveling to Mount Rushmore is on our bucket list, but we won't get there this summer, I am looking forward to learning what others recommend as well as your experiences once you've made the trip.

campground near Mt Rushmore

Last year we camped at Campground WELIKIT in Custer.
This is a very nice place. Quiet and close to the city and 15 miles away from Mt Rushmore. Do not forget to visit Crazy Horse memorial. very impressive and well worth visiting.
Good luck.

Just returned from Rushmore and the Black Hills SD. Stayed at Crooked Creek Resort & RV Park, 24184 Hwy 16 & US 385 Hill City, SD 57745. Great place and 7 miles from Rushmore and Crazy Horse memorial. Also went to Devil's Tower on a day trip without the TT. Do it. It is so worth it.

We stayed at Fort Welikeit too. Nice. Just outside of Custer. Custer is a cute town. Custer State Park was great! We went to Mt. Rushmore 3 times in one day...sunrise for photos (INCREDIBLE!!), midday for tourist stuff, and at night for the military tribute. Very cool. We also did Crazy Horse. Went in the afternoon and stayed till dark for the night show. Have fun!!

We stayed at the Rafter Bar J RV Park a couple of years ago. Great place!

Big Pine in Custer, near Crazy Horse and easy access to Custer SP. So much to see in that area, you'll enjoy this trip.

Rafter J Bar. We were in an area called "The Island". If we go back to the Black Hills we will stay there again.

X2, if you got kids this is a great place, lots of activities to let mom and dad relax a bit. Its a camping "resort", plain and simple. It is busy. We watched a lot of people come in and use this the last few days of the trip so kids had activities while the camper was packed up and cleaned and prepped for the long trip home

Do yourself a favor, don't stay at Custers Gulch RV park. Trust me!

The KOA at Custers Gulch is actually pretty amazing. Extremely clean, loads of activities for the kids and is right by Rushmore and Keystone. It is truely a resort. Yes, there are people. It is busy, but if you are going to get away from people don't go to a resort like this. If you are going for great fun and memories, I highly recommend the KOA.

I know where that KOA is, we passed it on the way to Rushmore. The place I'm talking about is just outside of Custer. The owners are very rude and not friendly at all. Your vacation will not be enjoyable if you stay there.

Looks like we will be staying almost the same time as Red Horse and in the same campground (Big Pine). We are leaving IN on the 29th. Remember to make reservations way in advance. There are other threads on the same subject. Just search this forum and you'll find several campground recommendations for this area.

Thanks for sharing this experience. We will be sure to avoid that place when we head out that way next month.
