Mouse in the RV!

Went out this morning to open the RV door for some fresh air. YIKES! I smell a dead mouse!!
Didn't find the body but did find where they have been munching on my toilet paper!!

I have put moth ball trays in various places in the RV to ward them off. Looks like it didn't work.

What does everyone use to keep them out?

Kathie

I use those ultra sonic pest repellers.. but for that you have to either have a hookup or a good solar system..

This is just my opinion -- but you cant keep them out if they want to get in - it is just impossible - so you just have to learn how to "manage" them. They get in places you just scratch your head at. I keep the food and nesting material out and the place clean, I then put sticky traps all around. They might end up staying a week or two, but the smell seems to go away pretty quick and a quick spritz (yes I used the word spritz) of Fabreese seems to get it back to normal again.

One other thing I have done that I think has really helped -- I leave the cabinet doors open and the drawers cracked. They seem to like to nest in dark spaces and by keeping them open - they have not nested. I learned this the hard way after they nested in my bag of manuals!!!!

Buy a bunch of cats and don't feed them very much! Other than that, I agree with tafische...put a few sticky traps out and check them often if you can. Good luck.

Go to one of your home hardware stores and buy packages of mouse poison. They come in packs and spread them around. You will know if you still have a problem as they will rip the packs open and if you do find a mouse they will be dead and none smelling as they shrivel up. I also suggest you check your rig for openings and use spray foam insulation to fill cracks plus steel wool. I found that there were holes in my front storage area on my fifth wheel. These holes were drilled for other wiring, so I filled them and did not have any more problems. I will check out my rig next weekend when I go to the farm. I may end up winterizing as I have no plans on going anywhere until at least January when I hope to go to Yuma for 3 months.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Sticky traps are kinda cruel. Cats I have to feed and leave outside, which makes coyote snacks.

I will try the leave the cabinets open and drawers, look for any openings and use steel wool.

The sonic pest controller sounds interesting as I have a hookup by the RV.

Thinking about the ultra sonic option for the winter. But I'm in cold weather in winter so battery has to come out. Will the 120 still work without a battery hooked up to power one of these ultra sonic pest repellers?

I live in the country where mice are a way of life. I had about three of them in the house and they figured out the glue traps pretty quick, guess they can smell them? No substitute for the old fashioned snap traps. Problem solved.

With every new RV I have had, the first thing I do is to find every possible place anything could get in the trailer and close it with silicone, wire mesh, etc. When RV sits for awhile, I put sticky pads in various places and check the RV regularly to see if anything has stuck to them. Large spaces can be closed up with the expandable spray foam insulation, but be carefull with it because it can expand more than you want it to.

they operate on 110 volt... you can get one high powered one that does a large area but for the RV I prefer the 4 smaller ones and plug them in at both ends to make sure the whole area is covered.. I got mine at Home Despot..

seann45,

I noticed you are in Canada, so I assume you remove the battery in the winter to prevent freezing. Does the 110v hookup still work without a battery? Do you leave yours plugged in all winter?

Thanks!
Mike

if your plugged in you do not need to remove the battery as it will be kept charged... for me I winterize my RV by parking it under a palm tree till spring. I winter near Palm Springs.

We have been using "Bounce" towelettes for years. They are the kind you buy for the dryer. Place them all over the trailer ie cupboards, under bed etc.

Wow, do they work? I did go to Home Depot and found the plug-in high frequency rodent things. I haven't noticed any mouse droppings lately.
I would like to try the Bounce sheets tho. Good idea.

Well it is the start of Winter so a good time to bounce this thread back up.....

So my in-laws purchased a bunch of those ultrasonic plug in deals at Costco. I have always figured they were gimmicky and dismissed them. Well I am quite surprised to report that after a month I have not even seen a mouse turd in the camper or in the cabin - I am stunned. Maybe they really do work? I hear they can become immune to them over time so we shall see - but so far I am quite impressed.

Just checked my traps yesterday, got one before it had a chance to set up residency. Keep my traps locked & loaded with peanut butter.... gets them every time!
