New digital thermostat

I gotta tell you that my newly installed digital thermostat is the best thing since hot buttered bread! Old one had 5+ degree temp variations and new one has only one to two. Much more comfortable.
I went with the Coleman-Mach upgrade (+$) so the wiring was a breeze. Only problem was I had to install it vertically due to not enough width at current location. Someone mentioned a crook in the neck if vertical install, but oh well, it looks funky but works great. I am a happy camper who can now read numbers sideways. Lol.

Great mod, did mine a few years back.

.... one would think with all this digital technology the device would automatically sense it's mounting orientation and adjust the read-out accordingly...., now that would be

It's the Coleman-Mach 8330-336 from rv'sRus. Got it thru Amazon for $70.39 which a lot of folks say that's way too much. But having an easy wire to wire match-up for a quick install means a lot to me. Even though I installed it, it still works. God knows I can mess up the easiest mod task. Lol.

And hey, Bob. Wish it would adjust orientation like my smart phone does. Maybe that's an option I can look into with Coleman....NOT!

I replaced both of my original analog thermostats with the Coleman brand after just a few days of full time. As you said, the temperature swing with the analog units was terrible. I also agree about the price vs ease of install. I wanted to do it once and have it work. Both did and it took minutes to do.

Almost 4 years later they are both working perfectly.

So maybe you can advise me...

Just got home from a short trip and had one day where we wanted a/c. I had switched out the manual (analog) thermostat with the RV Comfort Coleman Mach 8330-336, being so its both heat and cool. I thought everything was good to go until running the a/c and the furnace fan also kicks on and off. I've been searching this forum for a solution and thought I had found it where someone else reported this same behavior and said that it was cured by changing the jumper on the thermo from electric heat to gas. Mine doesn't have that jumper, just the one for f/c readout.
So I've got both the booklet for the Coleman Mach and the manual for the Atwood 8531-IV-DCLP L/D furnace and of course they may as well be written in some ancient dead language (did I also mention that I'm colorblind?).
When initially switching the units I did take a wire off of the old one and connect it to the new one, and thought all would be good, except for that damn furnace fan.
I have a trip into California in June and I'm certain I'll want some cooling so someone please solve this riddle for me.

This a mod is like to do. On my 264bhs though the thermostat is only for heat and the ac has it's own controls on the unit in the ceiling. Guess I need to see if they make one just for heat...

Sorry Cosmik, I can't help you with that one. I'm sure you did it, but did you recheck all the connections for contact and color matching?
Hopefully you will get some help soon. This Forum will not let you down.

well...

I did, but being colorblind I'll get my wife to verify the colors today. Wouldn't be the first time I've messed that up. Thanks

Here is the way the wiring is currently (no pun), according to my wife with me on pen, which I CAN handle.

From the Wall: Thermostat:

White/Orange White

White Grey

Green Green

Red/White Red

Red Yellow

Blue wire is not used and is capped

OK, this is just weird. Took the cover off of the A/C unit and can easily see the thermostat wires connected. The wire from the yellow post is red and the red wire coming from the wall is connected to the yellow thermostat wire. So that wire was supposed to be yellow the whole way isn't. The two striped wires coming from the wall (one is red/white the other is white/orange) are paired and separated just the last few inches, with the red/wh side connected to the red of the thermostat and the white/orange side connected to the white of the thermostat. One could make the assumption that these two, since not being seen at the a/c, go to the furnace. So, from this it would seem that the thermostat is hooked up correctly, and since I replaced the wires one for one with the upgrade, makes sense. But why then does the furnace fan come on when the a/c does?
I don't want to just try different combinations and risk letting the magic smoke out of somewhere.
Note to Jayco. Use the correct wire color from end to end.

update and possible (probable) fix

Email from Coleman Mach tech support says that the blue wire (which I had read was not needed or used) is the ground. Without it, the unit is trying to use the white wire (goes to the furnace) for ground triggering a cycle. Will check this out today but am certain this is the case since I know its not connected whatsoever.
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.

Sure hope that fixes it. My personal pony shows the BLUE thermostat wire goes to the 2nd blue and thick white wire on the camper wiring.

I think they separate the wiring to make it easier, cause some of the wires are the same color and the tracer makes it clearer? LOL

Not used in the front ac cause no furnace control.

A Coleman is the easy one. I never heard of anyone having a problem except the op.

Well, it really is easy. On my last RV I had no issues doing this. What I think happened is that I read some info online stating that the upgrade to digital didn't need the blue wire. As it turns out, the Hunter, if not mistaken, does not. So, I swapped out the wires, which should be an easy color for color match, but not on this Jayco, and left the blue capped. Just connected it and tested by running the heater until temp inside was high to check furnace operation, then shut that down. Came back out and ran the A/C and all is well. Moral of the story, get the info pertaining to your thermostat, not just assume, as I did, that digital was the same across brands.
Do the mod, you'll be glad you did.

I just check my current stat and its a Coleman mach. Does that mean it will be an easy swap for me to the digital version Coleman?

Easy as twisting wire nuts. The two mounting screw holes were slightly different and the digital model is a bit wider. The narrow spot where my old one was mounted was just barely wide enough for the new one. I can get you the actual dimensions if you want. I could never find them posted anywhere.
