New Guy

Previously I owned a 1992 Jayco tent trailer..had that for about 3-4 yrs. I have just purchased a like new 2016 Jay Feather RL 20. This is my first travel trailer ever. I didn't grow up trailer camping or anything like that. At this point, it's just my wife, me and our 13 yr old. We have other kids but they have moved on etc. That's my background in "RVing".

Here's what want to know: is this trailer "solar ready" or can it be made to be so? Thanks for any input.

Congratulations on the new-to-you Jay Feather and welcome to the forum.

I highly doubt your trailer is 'solar ready.' Lots of folks install solar on trailers without it being factory 'solar ready.'

There is a social group here called 'RVing with Solar' (I think that's the name). I would think you could get answers to specific solar questions there. There is a tab when you login called 'Community.' You'll find the social groups there.

These 2 YouTube channels will give you a lot of info on Solar. I'd suggest you to watch all the videos (several times).

From what I can tell about solar ready, is Jayco ran a few light gauge wires and placed a couple plugs. One usually in the front right lower corner of the TT, out side, and one one the roof. The plugs is a two wire plug, that looks a lit like what you use to connect the 4 wire harness between a light trailer and TV.

It would be really easy to run new wiring and do it right with heaver gauge wire.

In reality, you can contact Jayco with your vin number and ask for the wiring diagrams.

Go to the top of this page and look for a banner across the page. Starts on the left with User CP then "Registry." I am in the Solar Group and there are members who can help you. Read Jagiven's post above. My guess is that you have a solar plug on the right front of your trailer tounge. This plug connect directly to the battery. Make sure you understand your connections and type of "panel" you purchase. Some have controllers built in (suitcase panels), other have the controller separate.
