New guy, hitch question

Hi, new guy here. Friday we will pick up a new 2017 32bhds. Our tow vehicle is a 2003 Excursion with f250 springs all the way around and airbags on the rear. We have towed a Jayco 304bh for the last 10 years with an Equal-I-zer hitch and it worked well.

As of right now, the dealer with the new trailer has a Huskey Centerline TS hitch listed for us. He says this should work for us, but I'm skeptical. The hitch spec says the bars are 800-1200 lb capacity. From what I read, my tongue weight will probably be 1200lbs or so.

My equalizer on the old TT worked fine and the centerline is a similar hitch, but the new TT is taller, longer, and heavier.

Looking for opinions/advice about the hitch.

Thanks,
Dave

Oldman here.

Congratulations on your new Jay Flight and welcome to the forum.

I've had my Equal-I-zer brand hitch for 10 years and am very fond of it. If I was making the decision for me and I needed a new hitch for 1,200lb tongue weight, I'd stay with the Equal-I-zer brand.

Dave,

Welcome and congrats on picking up an awesome floorplan on Fri!!!

Regarding the wdh and the proper rated wd bars, IMHO 1200lb rated bars are not enough!!! Going by the "brochure" dry tw of the 32, which is ~950lbs for 2017, and add in the weight of 2-30lb tanks and a battery on the tongue which is ~160lbs, and you are at ~1100lbs before even loading the front pass through, the front bedroom, or any fresh water in the tank.

I would suggest at the minimum of getting 1400lb wd bars, if not higher. Part of it depends on what you may pack in the pass through, and if you will be hauling any large amount of fresh water in the tanks. As a comparison, our '16 32 has a "brochure" dry tw of 910lbs (that or 920bs...), and with the pass through loaded, ~20 gallons of fresh water in the tank, and 3 bikes (3-26", 2 Treks: 3500 & 6000, and 1 Specialized Stumpjumper) on the bike rack, our tw was 1440lbs ready to roll. Granted, I do pack heavy int he pass through. I will try to list most of the items. Weber Q220, Camp Chef Explorer 2 burner stove, EZ UP 10x10 commercial style (from Sams Club- heavy!!!), 2 Al roll top tables (rectangular models), 2-5lb propane tanks, 2- 9x12 awning mats, Sterilite tub with 25'- 30a ext cord, 50'- 12g ext cord, short tri tap cord, water hoses- 50', 25' and a 10' I think, 2 almost 8' long 3/4" electric conduit pipes (flag poles that slip over wdh snap up bracket "handle"), 6-12' painted pole with a brush on the end, and then under the bed: 4 bag chairs (at the front by the pass through), fold up wagon from meijers, ice maker, 5g water jug, and I think thats it.....

Almost forgot, I did build shelves for the three wardrobes (next to the bed and by the bathroom door) which added a little weight. And do have three 5" fence post sleeves under the trailer near the front. Storing: 7" GPL ladder, 30' of sewer hose/ elbow/ doughnut, and the black pipe for the cast iron rack that sets up behind the Camp Chef stove.

While you may not pack as heavy in the pass through, think about the 3 bikes on the rack in the rear cargo hitch removing a little tw on our rig. If time had allowed, I would have pulled the bike rack out to see just how much it affects the tw when I weighed the last time, just didn't have enough time though.

Check my mods thread for some ideas for the 32. I will get updated pics loaded soon if the bucket has finally locked out the linked pics.

Good luck and enjoy a great floor plan!!!

Thanks for the replies. We are excited for our new TT.

To get a 1400lb Equalizer I would need a 2 1/2" receiver right?

They are only charging me $300 for the Centerline TS, I may give it a whirl. If it's not up to the task after loading the trailer and getting some weights and trial runs, I may spring for a 3P.

More comments welcome!

You should be able to get a 2" shank that's rated for 14k/1400lbs for the Equal-I-Zer 14/14 wdh.

Remember that the 3P system is only rated for a max of 1400lbs tw as well, unless the company has updated/ changed the rating recently.

The Equalizer bars that are on your 12K/1200 are the same bars that come with a 14K/1400 complete head and assembly. The only difference is the actual head assembly on the 14K/1400# is beefier. I know this because I went from the 12k/1200 to a 14K/1400 and at the time called Equalizer and spoke with the tec. He said the same bars are used for both and stated that the only difference is the hitch head while all other components were the same for the 12K/1200 & 14K/1400. Told me all I needed to purchase was the 14K/1400 head which I did. By the way to answer your other concern the 14K/1400 also fits the same 2" receiver which you used for the 12K/1200. For around the same money that the stealer wants for the centerline you can upgrade to the 14K/1400 Equalizer head and still use all the other components you already have and be able to stay with a product that you were happy with. Personally it doesn't get any better than an Equalizer.

The Equalizer I have for my old TT is a 1000/10,000 unit and is already advertised as included in the sale of our old TT.

I'm going to have the hitch switched to a 1400/14,000 Equalizer. It does make sense to stick with what I know even if it's a little more money.

Thanks.

1400 TW is easily achieved with the 32BHDS.

I use the Reese DualCam and highly recommend it.

I'm with NeedAVacation. When I bought my Equalizer, 1400# was max. I wanted 1500. Maybe it's available now. Check with Equalizer or maybe someone here can answer whether you can just purchase heavier bars for your present WDH. I'm not expert enough to know.

But 1200 isn't what I'd want with your true load.

Talked to the dealer, he wants big money for a 1400lb Equalizer. For some reason he's discounting the Centerline so I'm going to use it to get home (20 miles) then order a 1400 Equalizer: and install myself. Then sell the Centerline.

One day closer. Old trailer sold tonight.
