New owner w/a couple of questions

We just picked up our 2014 Whitehawk 33bhbs yesterday. My head is still spinning from all the information. If the water heater, heater, etc fails to ignite when on gas setting, is there an indicator (warning light, etc)? Does anyone use a backup camera system? Any suggestions on a camera system? The 33bhbs is pretty long and I'm a little anxious about backing it in for the first trip, especially when everyone is watching to see how well you do!

If the stuff lights like it should, you will be able to hear it. On my furnace the fan runs a bit to clear the air, then it will ignite and you can hear like a little roaring sound down there when it takes off. I can hear the water heater from inside if it's burning, but always go outside and look to be sure it's burning properly. I do not have a backup camera. My trailer is similar in length to yours, but a fifth wheel so it's easier to back. I used to drive an 18 wheeler so I'm very comfortable with backing on my own, but if you are new to towing or would just feel more comfortable with a camera system, I would encourage you to look into it. One thing when you back, never be in a hurry. If there's any question what's behind you, get out and look.

gas fueled systems also shut down the gas feed if it fails to ignite. There is a heat probe that senses that it has ignited.

Don't worry about backing in the first time. Take it slow and have someone watching your clearances.
Everyone watching you was there when I backed mine the first time and when they see you in action will think, "wow, this guy really knows his stuff, not at all like that yahoo from a couple of years ago."

Ours is about 37' ball to bumper and even with experience, slow is the way to go. If you can enlist a reliable assistant and develop a means of communication, 2-way, hand signals, whatever works, I think that's a good way to go. My DW can handle either job, behind the wheel or behind the rig. Above all, stay calm. No yelling! I prefer human eyes over the lens, although it's great for backing up under the coupler.

One of the most important things you can do is to create a list.. There are several great threads here on that subject. Have a list for setup and takedown..

+1 on Redhorse's post.... If you can, find a large empty parking lot and practice.. Both you AND your spotter... Coordinate your signals so that you both know what each other is saying...

The Bride and I use our cell phones while backing rather than hand signals. The TV has a hands-free connection and it works out pretty well. I can watch the 5th from the cab and she doesn't have to be where I can see her.

Congrats on the new trailer. We will have to swap stories.

I am no expert a backing up, but I was able to back the 37' trailer down our 300' driveway and sqeeze between our house and the fence the 1st time. Ok not all at once, but it worked. I don't know if this is true, but since the rig is so long, it seemed easy to back up since the trailer doesn't react that fast to steering adjustments. Take it slow and don't forget to watch where the tow vehicle is. Don't ask me why I bought 2 sets of mirrors for my F150!

A spotter is a must, it's real hard to see behind the trailer and espically on the side that is facing away from you when turning.

I've only been on 1 trip last fall, but I'll help in any way I can if you have questions.
