New RV Buyer

Hi there! I am on the fence about buying a Jay Flight 154BH Baja edition. I think I am ready to take the plunge, but worried about the buying process through the dealership. Are there any tips or suggestions I should be aware of when buying through a dealership? I just don't want to miss something or pay more for something that I don't need.

Many thanks!

Make sure you are getting 30% off MSRP. This is a good time of year to negotiate. Don't buy the "starter kit" they sometimes offer. It's OK, but you can buy better quality items separately. Also make sure the PDI is included. Many dealers do them as part of the sale, but some charge as much a couple of hundred for the PDI.

Welcome to the forum and happy trailer shopping.

I bought our new 2015 trailer from Indiana RV Connection so I have nothing helpful about buying from other dealers. But, SOME folks have trouble getting any warranty work done through a dealer if they did not buy the unit from that dealer. I have not had a problem with getting warranty work done at a dealer near me here in AZ.

You didn't mention your tow vehicle plans. Dealers virtually NEVER mention PAYLOAD limits of tow vehicles; they talk about towing capacity. Tow vehicle PAYLOAD - everything in and on the tow vehicle, plus the trailer tongue weight - is usually the limiting figure that will be reached before towing capacity.

After you decide, you will need to do a thorough PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) to be sure the and the components are working as they should. This forum has a comprehensive checklist, but you'll probably find others if you search for them.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.

Make sure your TV is able to tow the new TT.
Assume your sales person will tell you anything to close the deal.

Buying New RV.

If it is a 2018 start at 35% off MSRP and don't go below 30% without some extensive shopping around. Additionally, expect a hard sell from the dealer and remember until you sign on the dotted line, the dealer owns it. There is a lot of hype about Amish Quality with Jayco, don't buy it. Have you considered buying a used TT? IMHO, the 1st 3 years of ownership is like a shakedown cruise.i.e, take it to sea, bring it home and fix the problems.
At least that was my experience with a Jayco. Be careful with the dealer, they can spot a newbe a mile away and most are like sharks smelling blood in the water.

The 30% off MSRP should be tax, title, and tag, hooked up and down the road too.
If you're looking at a unit that stickers for $40k, 30% of $40k is $12k that equals $28k tax title and tag down the road.
Also, if you know anyone that is "experienced" take them along with you. Another set of eyes that knows what to took for is always helpful. It also helps to tame the "sharks".
Heck, for a small fee you can take my wife with you. She is so good she'll have them PAYING YOU to take it off their lot! LOL!

Please answer an important question -- what is your tow vehicle. There is a lot of experience here that will warn you off if yours won't do the job.

You will need weight distribution hitch (WDH). For that trailer I would recommend and personally have an Andersen. Light weight, easy to hitch up and has integral sway control that really works!

I agree that the "starter kit" they want to give you is cheapo junk that might not last the first trip.

Since you are buying the Baja you may be going to camp with no electricity. Don't let them sell you a group 24 battery. At least a group 27. Do some research, you may want to go even bigger. Remember, you can get your battery ahead and bring it with you. Reject any battery that has been on the RV. It has probably been run flat sitting and is nearly worthless. My Farm and Fleet has a decent warranty on RV batteries. Others may also.

Thank you for all the tips. I have a 2018 4Runner with a 5,000lb tow capacity. I have done tons of research on the trailer itself, but just didn’t want to get suckered into any uneccessary add ons at the dealership. I was able to get them to meet my price requirements, which is in the 30% off range. Thanks again!

They may try to talk you into a spray-on coating of some sort, against the better judgment of many on these sites, I bought it when they offered it at half price. Worthless in my opinion, I now wax it Spring and fall. Using a wipe on wipe off type wax I get it done in a few hours. Gives me time to carefully look at the whole rig and reseal any areas that are not holding up.

Check out RV Inspection Specialists
They have three packages that you may be interested in with reports.
I have Frame/Structural issues with my new 145RB and using them saved my Butt.
Good Luck..
Have you checked out the E-Pro and some of the other smaller fiberglass Eggs.
Lots of options for you out there.
