Newbie here

Hi everyone,

I am new to the travel trailer world and wanted to connect with other Jayco owners for advice and just to chat about rv camping in general. My wife and I bought a 2008 Jayfeather 25 ft travel trailer last year and have camped out in it and enjoyed it greatly. I have a issue though and I thought some of you could help me with it. The smoke alarm keeps going off sometimes when I have it connected and set up. I tried to reset the alarm but it would go off again. When I put it in storage last year (2015) it went off so I disconnected the batteries. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I have a 2013 RAM Big Horn truck with a 5.7 ltr Hemi and a 8 speed trans with tow haul mode and would like some recomendations and advice on towing. Thank you.

Welcome to JOF. The alarm you speak of, is it a co/lp alarm down low or a smoke alarm in the ceiling?

The co/lp alarms work off the 12v battery system and will alarm if the battery is low. They also traditionally are noted for failing after 4-5 years except in a few instances. The smoke alarm uses a regular 9v battery that should be replaced every year.

Hope this helped some with the alarm. There are many here who like to help new campers through these type questions so don't be bashful.

alarm problem

It's the one down low on the wall near the bedroom, I do think it is a co/lp alarm. When it first went off I though the fire company was going to come over it is loud. So it could be the 9volt battery? Thanks.

No. Not the 9 volt battery. The 9 volt battery is in a smoke detector mounted to the ceiling.

The detector down low is the CO/LP (carbon monoxide/propane) detector that gets its power from the trailer's 12 volt battery.

So should I disconnect the 12 volt battery or is there another solution? Thanks.

In another post you said, "The CO2 detector near the floor, what can I do to fix this? It would go off after a while when I have it sitting outside my house. Should I disconnect the 12 volt battery? Thanks."

If you mean, the trailer is next to your house and the alarm is going off?
Then yes, disconnecting the battery will stop the alarm... just like it did when you put the trailer in storage.

Then you will have to find out why the alarm goes off. Is it a problem with the detector or is it actually detecting something (CO, propane, or ??) and fix that problem. Not having a working detector can be DEADLY!

Having responded to hundreds of CO calls, shut the propane tanks off, ventilate the coach for at least two hours, then close everything up to see if the detector then goes off. Those sensors are far more sensitive than most people think. Not many times in my experience that the sensor itself is the problem.

CO/LP Detector Problem.

It has happened with the tanks turned off and when I was connected to the house current. It didn't happen while I was connected at any site. So I guess I'll take it to my dealer when I take it out of storage here later this month. So I should replace the Detector then?
