Oh my back

Last month we camped for four nights. After the third night my back was killing me. We have a 3” memory foam topper but it’s not enough.
We’re trying to decide what to do. Do we replace the entire mattress or get a bigger topper?
Suggestions on what you would do or have done?

Got to ikea, buy a foam mattress, and replace it.

A topper was almost enough for us. The 'support structure' under the bed plywood was beefed up by our dealer to reduce the sag of the platform and that helped a bit. I eliminated the remaining sag by installing an additional support 2x4 under the platform.

With the bed platform sufficiently firm, the bed is now OK. Someday we'll be done with the abysmal OEM mattress and will put a good mattress on the improved platform.

I forgot I had replace the crappy little 1x2s with 2x3s below the platform.

I’m not a fan of toppers because you’ll still have the garbage Jayco mattress underneath which will just continue to degrade over time.

We went with a Brentwood homes 11” memory gel mattress from Amazon.
3rd season and its still great! As seasonal site campers we probably average over 80 nights a season. We liked this mattress so much we bought one for home as our every day mattress.

Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress, Bamboo Derived Rayon Cover, Gel Memory Foam, Made in USA, 11-Inch, Queen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J0I8RQ2..._TQHHBbD6GAGK5

I believe the mattress in ours is a queen shirt from what I measured. Not many choices out there. I found a 8” but a 10-12 sounds better lol

Amazon has a Dynasty Gel Foam Mattress 10 or 12 inch in queen short. Not sure if prices now, but we bought one for our Puma a few years ago and it was great to sleep on.

My back wouldn’t like memory foam. Try it without.

I’ve got back issues as well we just went to Denver Mattress and bought the firmest mattress we could get. I wanted to buy a foam mattress but the sales guy talked us out of it. With the temperatures changing when we store it will break the memory foam down pretty fast.

A friend of ours just got a new mattress for is toy hauler from The Original Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh.

https://www.originalmattress.com

They don't list short queen in their standard sizes but they made him one by request. I don't know what they paid for it, but he is very happy with the product.

They will also build mattresses to spec if you have an antique or odd size application.

I don't know what type of foam he was referring to, but our Brentwood 11" memory gel mattress has survived 3 seasons so far w/o any problems whatsoever. At my site where the camper stays 365, temps fluctuate from 0-100 degrees over the course of a year. Most decent mattresses have 25 year warranties.

We have a local mattress company we've used for years and had them do a higher end foam/latex in short queen for our last camper and a camper king for our current rig.
We do longer stints in the trailer and sleeping well is a requirement. This last one may even be more comfortable than the inner spring we have at home.

short story - we didn't replace the mattress in our travel trailer for a year and a half. Wife was semi ok with it, I hated it. Changed it out and the difference was so huge I vowed I'd never sleep another night on a factory camper mattress.
New 5th wheel for this year and we ended up leaving a month sooner than expected to avoid a blizzard and ended up with 10 nights on the factory mattress. We ordered the replacement the day after we got back... soooo much betta

This was at DenverMattress at Furniture Row. He said the warranty would be void since it’s not used in a controlled environment. I’m just repeating what I was told. We have a Temper Pedic at home and wanted it in our camper as well but the steered us away

+1 to just replacing it.

We ran a foam topper on top of our OEM Denver for about 2 years IIRC? But then the Denver gave out on us. We replaced with a Zinus foam in Short Queen from Amazon. GREAT mattress!

When we purchased our motorhome earlier this year, we took the OEM mattress out during PDI and put it in the trailer we were trading in. I had removed our foam mattress at the house before we left to trade in the trailer, and I put it in the MH as soon as we got home.

I will admit that it is a LITTLE firm for my liking, so we're thinking of putting a 2" topper on it just to take the edge off a little. But it is perfectly serviceable as it is.

X2 with CamperBob we tried a topper on the Denver cheapo, no go, reinforced the bed frame under the bed, no go.

Bought an Amazon Zinus 10 short queen, Much Improved Sleep!

It is very heavy, be sure to reinforce the bed lift arms. I ended up propping my bed up, taking out the 3/4 screws that hadn't already pulled out and putting in bolts clear through with large as I could use washers. Ok so far.

I also added foam rubber edge guards to the cabinets to protect my head when I got up and the mattress when I needed to get under the bed for something.

We replaced the supports under our bed with a beefy 2x4 which reduced the sag. Bought a custom sized mattress from TOCHTA. We are very happy with this mattress and it is made for campers. It can withstand storage conditions.

eBay has tons of options at very reasonable prices. The other thing is not all toppers are created equal. The GF has one on her bed that is absolutely worthless! I bought one from Costco, memory foam with gel, it’s been unbelievable!

For me the toppers are a stopgap. You need a good foundation which these stock mattresses in my three Jaycos didn’t provide after a while.

You won’t regret getting a good mattress.
