Oops. Forgot to Drain Water Heater! Rotten Eggs Anyone?

So our air conditioner went out yesterday and the boys and I had been wanting to do some camping, just have not had the opportunity yet, so it ended up being the perfect scenario to do some driveway camping. I set the camper with the expert tutelage of my 5 year old and we had the AC up and running in no time at all! Then I fired up the fridge and the hotwater heater.

When I turned on the hot water there was a VERY BAD egg sulfur smell. I forgot to empty out the hot water heater last time I used the camper. Yuck!

I emptied out all the water put 16oz of Hydrogen Peroxide in it, then topped it off with fresh water. Its been in there about an hour so far. Im gonna leave it in about 3 hours.

Ill let you know how it turns out!

Didn't think about draining the hot water tank. Do you normally drain it after every trip or is it just a winterizing item?

I drain my hot water heater after every trip. When I get to our campsite and after the water is hooked up and on, I run the hot water for about 1 minute to help clean out whatever didn't drain out. Doing it this way I have never had a problem.

Some chemicals in the water will react to the anodized rod that will give a biproduct of bacteria. It was stinky !!!

How is hydrogen sulfide gas produced in a water heater?
A water heater can provide an ideal environment for the conversion of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide gas. The water heater can produce hydrogen sulfide gas in two ways - creating a warm environment where sulfur bacteria can live, and sustaining a reaction between sulfate in the water and the water heater anode. A water heater usually contains a metal rod called an "anode," which is installed to reduce corrosion of the water heater tank. The anode is usually made of magnesium metal, which can supply electrons that aid in the conversion of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide gas. The anode is 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter and 30 to 40 inches long.

If you have one.

My Atwood HWH is all aluminum with a plastic drain plug (no dissimilar metals) ...... and no anode rod...., but doesn't mean my tank can't get the "stinky". If I let the hot water cool down and not use it for a week or so (in storage), good chance the next time I use it will produce a foul oder. Like others, I drain my tank if the TT is not going to be used for a period of time.

I believe the Suburban brand HWH's do have anode rods.

Drain water tank and run tons of water through it for like 5 minutes. Worked perfect for me last year when I had to do it our first night of camping. I have the Atwood water heater that does not have the anode rod.
