Picking up an Eagle 33RLTS in a few days, have a few questions?

Hello everyone, we are brand new to this site and wanted some advice if possible. We are taking delivery in a few days of an Eagle 33RLTS and wanted to know what we do not know about this unit or Jayco that we need to be aware of?

While we are new to Jayco this is our second TT and did a good amount of research on this and really feel we are going to enjoy this trailer. I’ll use it for business and pleasure as I travel throughout the state of Texas. We got tired in sleeping a bed I had no idea who slept in it before I (we) did. Our first trailer was a bit smaller than this and we would be stumbling over each other so we thought we would go big. I have a F250 and have an Equalizer hitch to pull this with and hope the added weight doesn’t hinder it but it is still 5K under the it’s limits.

So if you would please enlighten us so we can be ahead of the curve.

Welcome to JOF

The 2013 Eagle 338RTS has nice open floorplan and should work well for your extended travels. As you already know, the TT is almost 40ft long and on the heavy side so the towing relationship with your TV is important. IMO once you have your TV/TT combination "loaded" for travel, visit your local CAT scale to insure that your WDH is sized/adjusted correctly, weights are distributed properly, and confirm all other weight limit considerations.

The time spent at the CAT scale will put you "ahead of the curve" in respect to safe travels.

Even though the 338RLTS isn't you first TT, I would advise the dealer in advance that you will performing a detailed PDI. Also, inspect the roof (slide roofs as well) to insure all joints/seams are sealed/caulked adequately......., check caulking around vents, skylights, windows, door frames, etc.. Leaks after-the-fact can be a messy issue when it comes to service warranty claims.

Make sure the large slides go all the way in. Go out side and check them both top and bottom. Look for a tight even fit. Make sure they go all the way out and run your hand around the wood edges from top to bottom. Any extra space is not good. If either large slide isn't perfect don't sign the papers until it is fixed. Experience talking here.

Well I just discovered a little situation;

I have an Equal-i-zer brand hitch on my old trailer but it only has a 10,000/1000 capacity and the 338TLTS is listed at 9200 lbs dry with a dry hitch weight of 1145 lbs.

I know the answer to the question but wanted to ask it anyway, is there anyway I can keep my old under capacity hitch to keep from buying the 14,000/1400 hitch. I'm just hoping Equalizer so over engineers them it will work and i can save a lot of $$.

Sorry, but to be safe and within limits you need the larger hitch.

Call Equalizer and see if you can just purchase the bars.

I've found Equalizer's customer service to be outstanding. Let us know if they say you can switch out the spring bars.

Well we picked up the new trailer last Tuesday so we have had it a week and we love it. I am impressed with the build quality and layout of the 338.

We decided to take it on the road this weekend and drove up to the RV Park at Winstar Casino just north of the Texas Oklahoma border, it’s only about 60 miles so we thought it would be a great idea.

We did buy a new Equal-i-zer 14,000 WD hitch just to be on the safe side. The trailer towed well but we ran a few extra pounds in the air bags since this is a fairly heavy TT. We were impressed in the stability of the unit when towing, it really just tucked in and stayed right behind use. We had several semi’s pass us and that wasn't an issue at all.

One quick comment about Winstar is be sure and bring a level and lots of blocks as the concrete pads are not level at all. The whole site was built on a compound sloping piece of natural terrain and whoever poured the concrete pretty much just went with it. The sewer was actually uphill and no wifi or cable. We have no interest in Casino’s so we spent most of our time playing with the trailer, and hanging out with friends who live near the Casino.

The trailer really was a joy as almost everything worked without any problem and as it should. The new space was great for us and the dogs. I filled up the water tank and need to remember it is a large tank and takes a while to fill up but 80+ gallons of water but it lasts forever.

We did have one issue with the electric tongue jack I wanted to ask about;

On shore power it worked flawlessly but on the battery it blew fuses (30A) at any resistance.

The wiring was from the jack to a splice that went to both the trailer and the battery with an inline fuse. If I was trying to say, raise the tongue as soon as the jack touched the ground the 12V fuse the would blow so I had to hand crank the jack a couple of times until I discovered it worked fine on shore power.
I went thru all of the manuals that came with the trailer and wouldn't you know it there was no information on the jack. I spent some time on the internet and figured out it is a Jack Quick HH-3500 jack but again I cannot find any additional information on it. I also looked and found a tremendous amount of info on replacing and wiring one and in all but one case they did not use a fuse in the wiring.

I called and took it by the dealer, they checked the battery and it was fine so they are getting me a new replacement jack from Jayco. In the meantime if anyone might have some information on either the wiring or the jack it would be greatly appreciated.
