Plastic Shower Wall Rivets

I haven't tried it yet, so figured I'd ask first to see if anybody has any tips. What is the simplest way to remove the plastic rivets holding the shower surround wall on?

They should have a plastic nail in the center. Remove that and you can remove the clip.

Maybe somebody who has done it will chime in. I've looked at mine before and think the center river/nail is recessed in the outer clip...

is there a little slit in the rivet where you can slide the tip of a small flat head screwdriver into and then pull up to remove the "nail"? I used to work in the automotive industry and that was the standard way to do it at least as far as vehicles go.

Some of those pin systems need to be partially pushed in to be removed,

You push the pin part way in then the rivet wil pull out. When you go to reinstall you pull the pin out push the rivet in and then push the pin in until it is flush.

I just did this not long ago. I ended up putting a very thin flat head screwdriver under the outside ring and prying it up just slightly, then push it back down leaving the center pin head exposed. Pull that center pin out with pliers (or more often just the screw driver and a well-placed finger) and it pops right out.

On mine, the outside of the rivets that went through the wood behind the shower panel have a texture to them that gives them some grip, so even after I removed the center pin, I still had to pull them pretty hard to get them out.

They all went back in just fine though. Just take your time and be careful you try not to break them or bend them. They're not expensive to replace or anything, but I would imagine finding a match would be pretty difficult on short notice.

Thank y'all for the replies. I'm trying to come up with some ideas for better sealing these, or replace them with something else. As many RVs as we've had, several having these rivets, I've never really thought of them as a potential leak. Seems they could possibly wick water into the wall. I could be wrong.

Yes you need that gap. As water might get behind the wall, it can come out and dry. do not seal that gap. I know it is hard to look at.

It allows any water that happens to get behind that panel to drain back into the tub area. If you caulk it, that moisture will be trapped back there.

BTDT.

I caulked mine (actually had the dealer do it), and had problems with moisture back there. Thankfully it was from the basin, and not a leak in the liner, but still... That's when I discovered there is an intentional air gap back there top to bottom.

Above statements saying DO NOT CAULK are correct. There is a flange that goes from the shower edge up behind the wall about 2 inches or so. Water dont flow up walls. It allows for an air gap so water that does get in that gap to get air and dry.

I've looked at them too and my initial thought is any penetration in a shower wall is a potential leak; but after owning several and never actually having a leak I'm thinking why mess with something that is not a problem. Doing so will for certain product a potential leak at every point you open up no matter what you use to reseal it.

My advice is leave it alone unless you have a loose rivet or some indication it might be leaking.

At the RV mfg. plant they are happy to drill holes in the tub surround, all they needed is 4 holes on the outer edge corners. But what can I say......players on the side line see things always better.

Search online for Plastic Rivets. Amazon, Home Depot, RV sites among the results will have them. Usually in a bag that will have more than you need and are inexpensive as well.

If you have OCD, you may want to make sure you get the right color, shape, etc. as the ones you already have so a bit more searching may be necessary.

Here is one example.
