Power Cord Length

Just curious if anybody knows how long the power cord in my trailer is? It wont reach to the front of my trailer. I would guess it is barely 20 feet. There is a knot in it but i am guessing that my be so it doesn't get pulled out of the panel. I am going to have to get a 30 amp extension cord as I had it go full length once and it came up short last time we were out and had to change down to 15 amp cord.

20 feet seems short, but I dont think it is too much longer - maybe 25 feet. You can usually take a flashlight at night and see in the cord hole if there is a knot.

One of the first accessories I got when outfitting my camper was an extension cord. I have used it once I think, but it is good insurance. Also good to carry one in case something happens to your cord and you have to do an emergency replacement.

Power cords come in standard lengths of 25 & 50". If your cord goes into a "mouse hole", then depending on the distance beteeen the inlet and the converter, you'll lose some length there.

Both my trailer and daughters trailer develop knots inside the mouse hole from time to time. I can get to mine from inside and unknot it, but my daughter has to take off the mousehole cover to unknot hers. Terrible disign on hers and mine. Mines a Jayco, hers is not.

Have a good look at that knot. I ran into the same problem in an older trailer was using. If the mouse hole lets you shove the entire cord and plug into it, you may have reached in the next time you used it and pulled it out accidentally weaving it through itself and then it tightened the knot at around the 20 foot mark. Just my 2 cents.

My trailer has the rear living room design with swivel chairs next to the large rear window. Between the chairs is is a cabinet the power cord goes into. The cord start at the front of my trailer where the panel is and runs about 22 feet to a jb in the lower part of the cabinet. I'm going to to install a 30amp receptacle in the jb and put another male plug on the cord so I can push it through the mouse hole and than plug it into the receptacle . This way I can put a magazine shelf in the top part of the cabinet and have a small door to open for access to the jb. The plug is about 18 dollars and the receptacle about 12.

The second part of the mod will be putting a second run from my panel out the side where all the rest of my services are. I will have to install a heavy duty switch close to my panel so I can send the power to either run. I just can't imagine spending a hundred dollars on the conversion kit. One idea I thought of was using the locking 30amp plugs so if I wanted to get a gen set down the road I would be set to go. I don't see that happening in the near future so I will hold off on that. It will be easy enough to change later.

I was looking at that idea, but I would have to store a cord so I might as well get an extension cord.

Talking

Odd you asked this right now. I believe tonight is the first time we have NOT had to use our extension. Ours is 20' and the extension is longer, at least 25'. And this is our 28th night in the trailer with two more nights to get back home.

12+ years rv'ing...extension cord is mandatory, soon or later you will need it. Gonna convert mine too, mouse hole is exactly what it is, and a good path for sugar ants too!

Just to clarify my claim that the other night was the first time I recall not using the extension, our 32 footer has both electric and city water in the rear or the unit. I'd sure have preferred there being on the side where they belong. I nearly needed a 2nd sanitary hose at one stopover, just barely reaching the water spigot.
