Propane tank valve

I suspect I have a propane valve (the valve between my propane tanks on the front of my camper). When I open the propane tanks I smell a strong propane smell. I did spray with soapy water and couldn't see any bubbles but this is where the smell is coming from. I've attached a photo. The black cover on the valve is lose and I can't change it from one tank to another it's stuck.

Sound like a bad valve?

I’d say if you can’t switch tank to tank, it has failed. Seems odd that there are no bubbles when you spray it. Does your soapy water have enough soap?

I agree with RedHorse1, you most likely have a bad valve. Although your rig is only a 2021, I think I would replace the valve and hoses going to the tanks. Better to be safe and not sorry. You can never be too careful when messing with propane.

The failure may be at the joint. Try flexing the hose and see if there is a leak.

Thanks guys. I didn't have good soapy water. All I had was dawn and spray bottle. Does ok but it won't show a small leak.

I'm going to replace the assembly (valve and hoses). I looked briefly and from what I've seen there's a kit that comes with the hoses too. I agree I don't mess around with propane. It will stay off until I get it replaced. Good thing is it's so hot here we have no desire to cook inside. We either bring stuff from home we heat up in the microwave or go grab something so the propane won't be missed.

The trailer is a 2021 but it was never used by the original owner so it literally sat under his barn for 11 months. Guess that's not a good thing for propane valves.

When even soapy water won't show the slowwww leak, try shaving cream.

Get the cheap stuff...Barbasol?

Tire shop couldn't find a leak...but it was there.

I'll give that a shot!

Had a propane smell from one burner on Furion range and used soapy water did not show it, and yes it was soapy enough. Bought a propane sniffer from Lowes and tested showed the leak. I took it to the dealer who is great and they agreed could smell propane. They used soap also and even though it did not detect it when I picked it up there was still a propane smell. Took the detector out and showed the response when getting close to burner that was suspected and it went off. Since that time the dealer has picked up a sniffer and even let me know how much better it has been working. They are not expensive at all.

That's what I did, picked up a propane sniffer. With all the propane recalls and issues we've been having, it has helped having one.

I've always used a manometer, it would show a leak. But, I still had to go on the search for the leak. Propane sniffers are reasonably priced now, and that's the way to go.

Well, I don't think I'd use shave cream on a burner, though.....can't wash it off easily.

Flame Kings work and are inexpensive. There was a major recall on regulators that created a shortage.

I carry a detector in a bag near my tank. when changing tanks and hoses, you can save the price of a tank of propane for the cost of a reliable sniffer.

Sometimes when my regulator changes over to the full side, I can smell a whiff of propane but can never pin point it. Must be vented out the bottom as part of the switchover?

Propane detectors- which one?

I haven't had a chance to do much looking for a propane sniffer/detector. Quick glance I saw them from $30 to $400. I'm all for safety and I know many times you get what you pay for but hopefully there is some value in a middle of the road unit.

Anyone have a propane sniffer they recommend?

Thank you sir. That's the first one I saw. I can see where they come in handy once in a while.

I had to change both my hoses twice in five years due to leaks at the joints. This time I replaced them with stainless braided hoses that were a bit more flexible and so far, so good.

Mine developed a leak as described above after just 3 years - replaced hoses.

As many know, there was a major recall on Winn-Tec Model 6020 dual stage regulators. I can’t tell from the OPs picture if it’s one of those. Might be worthwhile to double check.
