Propane tanks?
I have 2 30 gallon propane tanks on my 2018 Whitehawk MRB23. When one tank runs out, say while running heat at night or cooking something, will it automatically switch to the other tank if both are turned on?
Thank you for the input.

No. You manually have to toggle the valve at the tanks

I think it really depends on the regulator that you are using. The manufacturers instructions that came with the one on my new Jay Feather 23RL states that the switchover will occur automatically when a tank reaches 10psi. This is a nice feature, but you do have to monitor things so that you don't end up with two empty tanks.

If you have a little green indicator you have an auto change over. When it goes red that means one tank is empty.

Easy way to test, turn on both tanks, light the stove, then turn off the primary tank. if the stove stays burning you have an auto change over regulator.
I usually keep my secondary tank valve closed, until I think I might needed it. This keeps me from having two empty tanks.

Thinking it would be extremely odd if an auto-switching regulator were not standard equipment on a 2018 Whitehawk. It was standard on my 2016 Jay Feather.

Agree on auto switch over. My 2007 19H had an auto regulator. Had to scratch my head on my new 23B because of the way they installed the regulator facing backwards from what I was used to.

Yes almost all RV with 2 tanks now have auto turnover. Open them both, and just check the dial every few days till you get a feel for how long a tank will last. If your not using your furnace a tank will last a number of weeks. Only turning one on at a time is just wasting a nice feature and will almost always assure you will be getting dressed in the middle of night to switch the tank over, since most fuel is used with the furnace.
There is no logical reason to not leave them both on, unless you can't remember to just look at the dial once in a while. The dial indicator does not move, but it will turn red and be pointing to the empty tank. Simply turn the dial to the active (green) tank, take the empty tank and fill it and then turn it back on.
Good Luck...

With waggs
I agree with waggs, but I had extra tanks when I rv'd in really cold weather. Be careful though as the auto changer I had on my TT would leak out the good tank if you unhooked the empty take to get it filled. You had to turn off the full tank to prevent this = no LP if you have one tank off to get it filled.
If you are camping for a long time in cold weather consider a 20 pounder as backup you can hook up while you get another 30 lb filled.

I have never experienced that, perhaps it was something with your regulator? Since we work kamp for 6 months at a time, I do this every 2 to 4 weeks, never had to shut off good tank while empty tank was being filled, and sometimes that would be a day or two before I got it back on the RV.
Interesting, perhaps others can chime in as to why that situation would happen? I would think if propane could bleed from one tank to another, you would always have two tanks partially filled or completely empty?

A regulator will function where it is made for unless there's a defect. Then replace them.
We always have the paranoid with what if..........
Propane you can smell if there's a leak. Just keep open flames or generators away from the tank area.

Leaking gas
Perhaps the auto changer was bad, but if you disconnected the empty you could smell gas so I know it was leaking out of the exposed tank connector.

Agreed, not supposed to work this way. I'm thinking defective regulator if that was happening. I swap mine out a couple of times a season, never turn the "live" tank off and never detect any kind of leakage during the swap.
