PSA - Check your window screws

I have the typical single pane tinted windows in my trailer. The other evening we were sitting inside during a rain storm with quite a bit of wind. The wind was pushing rain horizontally against the door side of the trailer, where there is a large window by the dinette. I noticed a very small trickle of water inside the trailer coming from the bottom corner of the window.

I checked the outside gasket between the window frame and the aluminum siding and it looked good. I then grabbed my screw driver and checked the window frame screws inside the trailer - many were incredibly loose! I gave them all a good tightening and so far so good. I could actually see the two parts of the window being pulled back together as I tightened. I guess after all the years of bouncing down the road and the winter/summer thaw and freeze, the screws worked themselves out.

I recommend checking your window screws to make sure they are tight and that the butyl and foam gasket are properly compressed. This is a similar concept as the famous AC bolts loosening up. Check em!

Great tip.
I'll add to that to check the lags that hold your awening to the trailer. I was able to turn mine between 1 - 2 revolutions to get them snug again

That’s something that I’ve never checked, but it does make sense to check those.

What really needs to be checked is the caulking around the water heater. That’s a gateway entry point for water to seep in and you’ll never know it till your floor is all rotted out.
Also check the screws on your outside storage doors, you have to open the doors to see them ( usually 2 screws at the bottom) it not caulked properly water will enter there.

Great point and since we are jumping on what should be checked let's not forget the outrigger bolts that hold the body to the frame!

Yes, good point. They were all loose on my old trailer, brand new from the factory. Unacceptable.

Thanks, all, for the great reminders! I have the outrigger bolts on my preflight checklist, even though I put nylock nuts on all of them. So, far they’ve stayed put.
