Question about refrigerator options

I preordered a 2021 199 MBS. I have a question about the refrigerator options. The standard fridge is the 6 cubic foot gas / electric. The optional fridge is the 12 volt 8 cubic foot (no gas). While the upgrade charge is negligible ($35), the salesman advised that in order for the 12 volt fridge to function well I would need to upgrade to 2 AGM batteries at almost $400 per battery. And I am guessing that they are also pretty heavy.

I'm looking for feedback / opinions on this. Is it worth doing this upgrade? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

A lot depends on how you want to camp. If you are always in a GC with an electric site, no need for a battery upgrade. If you will be off the grid, then you need to have a power solution. Solar or a generator could be an option. There are lots of battery options too. Lots depend on how long/often your off the grid.

You could buy 2 traditional 6 volt golf cart batteries for $250. You could buy lithiums for up to $1000 each. Lithium batteries, are much lighter than leaf acid. No matter what, you can buy 2 AMG batteries, cases, and wire leads for a lot less than $400 in total.

Just remember, they are only considering the frig, no other loads on the battery.

I have had 3 way fridges before and never had any luck running them on 12 volts. Now I just leave my LP on unless I am staying several days at a camp plugged into AC. LP seems to cool better than 12 volt or AC and the fridge uses so little it does not matter. Compared to the cost and problems of having multiple batteries and keeping them charged I would go with LP/AC every time.
