Question on low point drains

The low point hoses on our TT both have PVC caps. Is there any reason not to replace the caps with ball valves just to make life a little easier?

That shouldn't be a problem. My Jayco for example already has exposed valves on the low point drains.

I need to find some kind of caps for my low point drains. Last time I drained the water lines, I had to take a wire and clear out the mud dauber nests.

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.

While winterizing this year, the rear low pt. drain didn't drain anything. I was concerned until a few hours later realized it's the drain for the fresh water tank that we never filled this season.

DUH!

I put ball valves on my low point drains. I also extended them to the edge of the trailer. So much nicer now

Is Jayco putting caps on the LP drains now or was this done by a PO? I would worry that a cap held on by friction might be problematic but a screw on cap might be a good solution. Having access under the trailer instead of removing panels to reach the valves would make draining a bit easier (until I’m too old to stoop down).

We have never seen caps. So the answer is change out the caps for 1/4 turn ball valves. Our guess is they were trying to save a couple of cents.

Thanks everybody. I'll add that to my list for next spring.

Caps were used on older units for years.

That's exactly what I did. While on the pex crimping roll I replaced most plastic valves with quarter turn brass ball fittings. I installed one inline to outside shower to avoid having to winterize that if not used, feed line behind toilet, fresh water tank drains and those low points.

Did you run the lines inside the chloroplast or outside? How did you hang the valves at the edge? DW and I are getting too old to get under the fiver. Thanks.

I added "Shark Bite" ball valves to my 2 low-point water-line drains when the shut-offs under the bathroom vanity stopped shutting off the flow. They work great! Replaced the one on the kitchen FW tank when the plastic turn-valve broke. That drain uses a hose, rather than PEX; so I used a barbed hose fitting x 1/2" NPT hose adapter & hose clamps, then added a 1/2" quarter-turn shut-off valve.

The only issue I've encountered is that the valves neck down in size from 1/2" (PEX) to 3/8" compression. That cuts the water flow by 25 percent, so it takes a little longer to drain the tank. Not really that big a deal, though. As an aside, the drain for my kitchen FW tank is at the edge of the trailer, right next to my steps. It's right above where I set my dog's outside water dish, so I use it to fill the dish. Pretty handy! Only took me 2 years to figure that out!

I replaced the plastic valves a few years ago with ball valves. Not a problem. Love them.

I would be concerned about the extra weight of a metal ball valve especially a shark bite style valve on the end of PEX tubing. Mine are quite long about 11" of unsupported PEX ymmv. I imagine the lines trying to swing back and forth going down the road causing fatigue and later leaks.

Piece of fuel line (and maybe a hose clamp). Friction will usually hold it on without a clamp. Plug the open end of the hose with a pencil or crimped tubing.
