Questions about the 338RETS

We bought a 2014 338RETS when they first came out and sadly had an accident shortly after getting it which totaled it. We went for a few months w/o a trailer and decided to get another and found a great deal on another brand so we bought it. Now a year later we are again considering getting a 338 because it was such a better trailer. We are going to wait for the 16’s to come out and see if they change the kitchen counter hopefully since they are really lacking, hopefully they will change to a larger counter with a turn in it like is in the 5th wheels.

I have looked on Jayco’s website and here and haven’t found an answer to a couple of questions.

1. Can someone tell me what the axle ratings are in the 338?

2. Also what is the length from the front axle to the coupler on the hitch?

If they change that then they would have to go to 4 slides so they could split the back side and leave a space for the counter. That means lots more weight...which means...fiver

We use a folding table in the dining kitchen area. This solution is perfect for us because we can slide it over the the table once everything is prepared.

We picked up ours at wallyworld but looks about the same. Its table height so once we sit down to eat everything is within arms reach.

The 338 uses 5200 lb Dexter axles which are the same as their 6000lb axles except for the springs. My 338 (which is fully loaded plus I added a leveling system) came with D rated tires which I switched to E rated Maxxis tires. My 338 fully loaded as it sits right now with 2/3 tank of fresh water weights in at 11,700 lbs with 2200 lbs of tongue weight including extra battery, propane and washing machine plus all the other stuff in the nose. The tongue weight really surprised me!

And that's a good surprise. When I got my 351RLTS home I was pleasantly surprised to find it's tongue weight is consistently at around 2800lbs loaded. I was expecting more.

But Norty1 you are pulling a 5er right? We are talking about a TT (i.e. bumper pull).

You are correct, My bad I was not reading it correctly. 2200 is a pretty high tongue weight for a tag-a-long. Dry wt is 1140 or so.

I had to buy heavier spring bars and readjust the weight distribution hitch so it puts more weight on the front of the TV. It pulls fine. I would have never known the tongue weight was that heavy had I not taken it to a CAT scale. I had a 30' Springdale before and the tongue weight seemed similar, but it ain't! Like 1000' lbs difference. My point is everyone should make a trip to a CAT scale just to see.

Not what I'm talking about, there are many TT's on the market today with much more kitchen counter space. Below is a pic from a 361REQS as an example, they are making now and could adapt to the 338 with little effort. (Just the counter not necessarily the cabinets.)





Thank you for the answer to the axle question.
Would somebody please put a tape on say the front hub and run it up to the hitch and let me know. it would be greatly appreciated. I'd run by a dealer but right now there isn't a 338 within a 100 miles of here.

We are still waiting on a look at the 2016’s before making a final decision but I had a thought and wanted to get some opinions on this if I could?

On our old 338RLTS I had two rubs I didn’t care for one was the front jack being too short. The way Jayco builds the front A-frame causes it to be about 6 inches higher than almost all other trailers but the still put a regular 18” electric jack on it, several times we had to put a pretty good stack of the yellow lego blocks under the jack to get the trailer level. One thought is to not order the electric upgrade and purchase an aftermarket 24” jack for a little more than the optional 18” jack. The question is, has anyone replaced the 18” jack for a 24” jack?

The second were the stabilizers (or lack thereof) we had the electric stabilizers and they worked fine but; we noticed a pretty good bounce in the trailer when we walked around that I’d like to get rid of. My idea is to add an additional set of manual stabilizers mid-ship and if I do that it may seem more practical with going with manuals all the way around. Those with manual stabilizers do you find it easy to run them up and down with a drill/driver and has anyone added another set of stabilizers to their trailer?
