Rapid Tire Wear

I have pulled my new Eagle 314BHDS about 900 miles in the last 1.5 months since we purchased it. We are having what seems to be the standard issue with the bathroom vent leaking. I think the dealer will fix that quickly. The issue that has me much more concerned is that I have one tire that is rapidly wearing on the outside edge. It is the the rear right tire. I am certain that the camper is not overloaded and I keep the tire pressure at exactly 65 PSI. I took a thermal reading on the inside and outside edge of the tire after about 3 hours of driving. The outside (or worn edge) measured at 134 degrees and the inside edge measured at 115 degrees. The other three tires all measured at 124 degrees inside and out plus or minus 2 degrees. (My father in law had the gauge with him for his trailer and suggested the readings). I am scheduled to head about 600 miles away in 3 weeks and that scares me. I have a call into my dealer but no response yet. I am doubtful that it is a bad tire, but maybe. I am thinking it is an alignment issue? Any thoughts, suggestions, remedies or information would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea what the problem might be but agree it sounds like some kind of alignment issue. I think I would take a few measurements between the two rims on that axle to make sure the tires are parallel to each other.

Seems that if the axle itself was cocked in relation to the trailer frame both tires on that axle would have a problem.

Just some random thoughts.

This off the right rear axle, a Westlake tire with 5K on it, Jayco sent to Westlake and refused warranty. The wear was on outside of tire and the alignment was checked as perfect.

Not quite that bad yet but probably on its way. I only have 900 miles on it so far. Tread depth is down to .127" on the outside, .187 on the inside. The other 3 tires are all between .22" and .23" thread depth.

Does the edge with the excessive wear have a larger circumference than the other edge? If so, the cause is a broken belt. To check this, you could jack up the axle enough to spin the tire, and then feel the surface with your hand and eyeball the space between the tire tread and the pavement as you spin the tire.

Obviously don't get under the trailer without jackstands.

Just a guess but could be a slightly bent spindle at that location if the axle measurements are in spec.

It needs to be found and fixed no matter what the problem is because it won't fix itself.

I would have the tire and rim inspected and a lug centric balancing done.

If that shows nothing wrong with rim or tire then axle alignment is next.

You have the exact same issue I have. Only mine is on the right front tire...

I have spent the last several days exploring possible causes. I jacked the camper up and spun the wheel in question. It was solid and spun true and honestly felt great. I checked the axles for straightness with a 5' steel straight edge and they looked perfect. Finally, I measured the axles using a laser measurement tool. It is a little tricky but I averaged out that the axles were separating end to end by about 1/8". This does not seem like a lot but I can not find the manufacturers tolerance. Several people have reported similar problems but no one seems to have the answer. A couple of people indicated a broken belt. My research of what broken belt tires look like does not match up but that is the easiest fix. So for now I am going to put a new tire on and see what happens. I have a 1,500 mile trip coming up in the end of June. I will post back then and let you know what has happened.

i would think a tire wearing just on the outside would have to be the tire itself or the spindle.I would think if the axle alignment was affecting it the opposite tire would have some type of wear also.Pull the tire in question and swap it with the spare and see what happens,you could also use chalk and mark a line across the tread and drive a few miles and check the wear from the chalk to see how the tire is making contact with the pavement.

When our 07 Jayflight was new I had a tire wearing like yours. I happen to repack the bearings one day and found that bearing a tad loose (you could pull the axle in & out ever so slightly, where the other 3 didn't move). I put a good tire on that corner and it didn't wear funny after that.
