Re-Keying or alike keys

Hello all,

I just got my new 28BHBS last week and love it. A step up from my 2007 27BH Jayflight for sure. My question to all o you, I was surprised to see that there are 2 different keys for the doors! 1 key for the front enter door and another for the rear entry door. For the life of my I dont understand why they did that. Now I have heard the no they should be the same then I have heard no they are different from people at an un-named Jayco dealer.
Have any of you who have 2 door experienced this? Is this normal? I did call the parts dept to find out if I could get them keyed alike. I was told they can do it but it is "very expensive"! (How much I did not ask)
So my question to all of you what is the deal? Did this happen to you? Do you know of an easy way to get them keyed alike?

Thank you,
Cabodog

My dual door AF came with two different keys for each door also. This has been the case with nearly every one I've come across. The reason I was given previously by northwood was that they grab boxes of locks and assemble them and that it wasn't cost effective to try to keep locks paired during manufacturing.

Thanks Rusty! Seems like a poor excuse to me especially for the cost of these rigs nowadays!

Here is an interesting anecdotal tidbit....

In trying to get my AF keyed the same I contacted the lockmaker thinking I could just order the proper lockset to match one of my existing... I certainly can but there is a 50% upcharge to get a specific keyset... as in someone has to go sort through them until they find a set with my number on it and I get to pay for that persons time. I was so frustrated with the whole thing that mine is still keyed differently.

So apparently even the maker of the locks don't have an easy way to keep them organized.

I just painted one of my keys with fingernail paint. Makes it much easier.

Guess that's why the 751 lock is so common. Otherwise, all the outside compartments and access doors would have different keys.

Really, having to put up with different keys to entry doors because a manufacturer is unable to keep the lock sets sorted is just pitiful.

Unfortunately it's common practice.

You can go to RVLocksAndMore | RV Locks | RV Keys | Fastec FIC Locks and Keys, and order new matching locks, including cargo hold locks and they will all match, for a good price.

Re-Keying or alike keys

Check the RVLocks and More website. I bet even if they can't match one of your keys, you can buy two new locks for less than what a locksmith will cost.

There have been several threads on locks and keys in this forum- I'd find a few for you but I'm on my phone at the moment. Just search the forum for RVLOCKS.

It is my understanding that Jayco changed over for the 2017 models that all exterior doors are keyed alike. My 28RLS has this, so one key opens both doors AND both storage compartments. It is about time! However, the outside shower has a separate key, which kind of makes no sense. But it does.
