Re-Keying or alike keys
Hello all,
I just got my new 28BHBS last week and love it. A step up from my 2007 27BH Jayflight for sure. My question to all o you, I was surprised to see that there are 2 different keys for the doors! 1 key for the front enter door and another for the rear entry door. For the life of my I dont understand why they did that. Now I have heard the no they should be the same then I have heard no they are different from people at an un-named Jayco dealer.
Have any of you who have 2 door experienced this? Is this normal? I did call the parts dept to find out if I could get them keyed alike. I was told they can do it but it is "very expensive"! (How much I did not ask)
So my question to all of you what is the deal? Did this happen to you? Do you know of an easy way to get them keyed alike?
Thank you,
Cabodog

My dual door AF came with two different keys for each door also. This has been the case with nearly every one I've come across. The reason I was given previously by northwood was that they grab boxes of locks and assemble them and that it wasn't cost effective to try to keep locks paired during manufacturing.

Thanks Rusty! Seems like a poor excuse to me especially for the cost of these rigs nowadays!

Here is an interesting anecdotal tidbit....
In trying to get my AF keyed the same I contacted the lockmaker thinking I could just order the proper lockset to match one of my existing... I certainly can but there is a 50% upcharge to get a specific keyset... as in someone has to go sort through them until they find a set with my number on it and I get to pay for that persons time. I was so frustrated with the whole thing that mine is still keyed differently.
So apparently even the maker of the locks don't have an easy way to keep them organized.

I just painted one of my keys with fingernail paint. Makes it much easier.

Guess that's why the 751 lock is so common. Otherwise, all the outside compartments and access doors would have different keys.
Really, having to put up with different keys to entry doors because a manufacturer is unable to keep the lock sets sorted is just pitiful.

Re-Keying or alike keys
Check the RVLocks and More website. I bet even if they can't match one of your keys, you can buy two new locks for less than what a locksmith will cost.
There have been several threads on locks and keys in this forum- I'd find a few for you but I'm on my phone at the moment. Just search the forum for RVLOCKS.

It is my understanding that Jayco changed over for the 2017 models that all exterior doors are keyed alike. My 28RLS has this, so one key opens both doors AND both storage compartments. It is about time! However, the outside shower has a separate key, which kind of makes no sense. But it does.

Good website. I ordered new compartment keys to match my main door key. I was happy with them.

Another tip 'o the lid to the Locks and More folks. Went from 3 keys to one by spending about $35, a new entry latch set and 3 cylinder locks (storage compartments-751 key). They sent the wrong length of cylinder locks, I called and the new ones were on their way with a pre-paid postage sticker to return the wrong ones. The entry latch set is better than the original. The basement doors were kept and I ordered the new locks to match that key. Each lock came with a key and now I have plenty of spares.
What's not to like?

Get copies of the original keys made and ask the locksmith to stamp an F on the key for the front door and an R on the key for the rear door. Then use the copy keys and keep the original in a safe place. I did that on our last 2 door TT and it saved a lot have hassle.

I had problems getting keys duped. The blanks are $$$ at the local RV place and they don't cut keys so. Few more $ for that. The 751 keys are cheap, after all they're everywhere. As I said earlier for about $35 I got an upgraded entry latch, 5 spare keys and a 1-key trailer.

You need a locksmith. My guy has blanks for any RV made. Costs about 3 bucks a key and that's cut. Stamping is free.

My 2016 38FDDS came with 3 keys! One for the slider, one for the rear entry door and one for the exterior storage cubbies/shower.

Our Whitehawk has different keys for the front and back door, which look exactly the same.
Invariably, I always put the wrong key in first. Each time, (after cursing), I say, "I need to mark these keys to distinguish between them!" And of course, I have yet to do that....

Cabodog,
Welcome and congrats on the new 28!!! What year is it?
As mentioned, RV locks and more for the global keys. I ordered 2 entry door sets (cylinders only), a matching key cam lock set for the front pass through, and 2 lighted keys for about $50.
Only 751 key left is the outdoor shower. Factory cylinder length was to short for what RV Locks had.....
The new '17 Flights are suppose to have matching keys now. Not sure about storage doors though....

My trailer being a POPUP the window flaps are VELCROED to the door assy when setup...
When you show up with your full of groceries you can just slip one hand down the edge of the door and reach inside and unlock the door...
It is actually quicker doing this then reaching into your pocket and finding your keys haha...
We don't ever leave anything inside our trailer that is valuable if we have to leave the trailer unattended for any length of time. All those items stay in the locked truck... I do lock the door but that really only keeps honest people out of it haha...

I agree this is frustrating, even on my little 16XRB i have a different key for each of hte following
- Door
- Bed ends (Surprisingly both ends are the same key)
- Storage hatch
- Outdoor shower
Its not as bad as some of you guys, but its incredibly irritating packing around more keys then need be, As soon as warranty is up i will be matching to the bed end key for all of them.
