Rear mount bike carrier with reinforced hitch.

Hi Guys,

I have read many posts in regards to bikes mounted to rear of travel trailer. I agree I would not want to mount them to the bumper. But how many have had sucess mounting a receiver hitch to the frame? I have a Bike carrier for our bikes already, and would love to be able to use it. I have heard and read many posts about bikes falling off of racks mounted to the bumpers or ladders. But there is not as much about people who have actually mounted a solid receiver to the frame and then used a good quality bike rack.

I have a receiver hitch welded to our TT frame. No issues as all. It is rock solid.

I have mine mounted to the bumper but then again my manual/specs says "continuous weld bumper". It's not spot welded as some are. I've checked and indeed it's solid weld all the way around and to the frame and has no issue holding my two adult bikes. I'm using a "swagman" brand rack.

I have ours attached to the bumper as well and have had no issues. I use some rope to cut down on the movement of the bikes when going down the road.

I had a hitch that was bolted to the frame on my Dutchmen, and then hung the 4 bike carrier on it. After 3 years, the frame broke and the hitch was hanging from one side. Luckily it was discovered so that it could be removed before it broke the frame on other side and complete hitch, carrier, and bikes hit the road.

Our 32BHDS has the 10" I-beam frame, so I am going to get the Reese expandable receiver and bolt it direcrly through the frame. There should be no worries then. I have a Draftmaster rack, and it holds the bikes vertical with no wiggle.

I have a 4 bike carrier mounted to the rear bumper, i modified 2 (1/4 ") oversized steel plates and welded 1 of them to a hitch receiver purchased at a local farm supply , then drilled 4 holes in them just outside the width of the bumper and sandwiched the bumper between them and mounted it with hardend bolts. Works great. Also welded a small plate on the bottom of the bumper to the camper frame to make it a little more ridged.

I thought about adding a class II hitch to my TT but decided to weld to the frame class I receiver hitches to the top and bottom on each frame rail. I then built my rack to slide into these with my bike racks mounted to the removable rack. I used a class II hitch on my truck camper for bikes but the bikes would osculate and after a long use the welds on the bike rack started to fail. Adding a strap the the bikes did help.

Here's a picture of my bolt-on receiver. Made for TT bumpers, I use it for my tray which carries my Septic Tote (when full hook-up isn't available where I'm going)

Same here, welded to the frame not the bumper. I use it to tow my jet ski, but wouldn't hesitate to throw a bike rack on either. Find a good weld shop and have them fabricate one for you.

Adding a hitch to the rear of your TT will work just fine. I know several people who have done it with success. As stated above, make sure you find a quality welding shop in your area to do the work.

On a side note, why not install a front mount receiver on your TV and carry the bikes out front? I just ordered one from etrailer.com and a Swagman 3-bike carrier from ebay. I didn't want to take any more weight off of the tongue of my TT and want to free up some space in the bed of my truck. That's why I went that route.

Either direction you choose will work beautifully.

Good luck,
Dave

We carry our bikes on a front receiver/carrier on the front of the truck. Bike wheels are held in wire wells on the carrier (Swagman). It works out very well. Racks that hang the bikes from the bike frame are not so good on the front of the truck. Have been there. In last 12 months have carried them there for over 8000 miles - no problems.

x3 on front receiver hitch. The Ranch Hand replacement front end on our TV has a built-in receiver hitch, we simply use a Thule carrier in it and don't have to worry about bikes banging around on the back.

Rear mount bike carrier with reinforced hitch.

Using a Curt Bumper Hitch Receiver with a Swagman 4-Bike RV Rack on a 32TSBH. The Swagman is built like a tank! NOTHING short of hanging a pickup off it would bend it! So far, so good. I routinely check the welds on the bumper which are continuous.

I plan on going with the Swagman xc2 Rv package off of the bumper on the rear of my trailer, yes my bumper is continuously welded and before I put it in storage last fall I had some welders at work add gussets from the frame and back plate that encloses the underbelly to support the bumper.

Here is how mine is done:

The bolt is to tighten the Swagman rack so there is no movement!

Welding to the frame makes sense to me. But I have read posts where they say the frames are not designed for that kind of strain. Still can't decide for sure , but I believe I am coming with a rack mounted on the A frame up front.
