Refrig safety question

Is it safe to travel with the refrigerator running on gas? We are leaving for vacation for Labor Day and my plans are to initially cool down the refrig with shore power and then switch to gas operation for the 6 hour travel time and I am not sure if it is ok to travel with the unit running.
Thanks for any help on this, Bob

Do a search through the older posts. This question has been asked a lot of times with some good answers.

I've traveled with the ref on gas for the last 45 years. Never a problem. We didn't even have a electrical option in the old days. I turn off while fueling and then back own when thru.

This is very true. However as 99 percent of all problems have been discussed at one time or the other if all we did was search for the answer....then this forum would die. . I like the forum...ask me anything...I'll answer even if I don't know the answer.

Holy Cow, someone else who actually admits to never shutting it off. I've been getting flamed (pun intended) on another rv forum about this very topic, just today. Funny how on these forums everyone jumps on the good boy, strictly by the rules, bus. I too, never shut mine off, and I'm still around to tell the tale. I have yet to see the fireball RV that didn't shut off the fridge before refueling.

Since gas fumes are heavier than air and the fridge is usually 4 ft off the ground it would take an awful lot of fumes to cause a problem. I am also willing to bet that you will find that over 50% of rv'rs don't. Also with the new pumps the biggest majoirty of fumes are re-captured. EPA says so....

Having owned several motor homes in the past, first was a new 1982 Southwind with a 454 gas engine. The hot water heater and refrigerator we're located within a few feet of the gas fill. Big sign said turn off gas. It became a habit and I continue to this day. BTW we averaged about 5 miles a gallon with that rig. 3 speed auto.

The gas takes over when the electric get disconnected at the house. Stays running on gas 100% of the time until electric is again restored at the campground.

We travel with the gas on in our WhiteHawk.....now, here's my question.....when the law says to turn off the propane at pumps and in tunnels.....does that mean to uncover your propane tanks and turn it off at the tank or is it ok to just turn off the refrigerator....it's usually the only thing running that has to be turned off.

I travel with my gas on and I have never shut it off. The sign also says no smoking and stop engine. I work on dispensers and tanks for a living and you would be surprised how many people I see smoking at the dispenser while fueling.

Mine is off most times. I cool it down a day or two ahead and travel with it off for most short road trips. When I do have it on...I usually turn it off at fuel stops. Of course, I spent 32 years as a firefighter teaching public safety. Have I ever seen one start a fire at the gas pumps? No.

Ours is always running when we travel. I do not shut it off when filling up because diesel isn't as likely to explode as gasoline.

They want the tanks turned off in tunnels, at least here in Va.

The fridge get plug to shore power at least a day before departure, then while driving the propane takes over and stays on wherever or whatever I'm driving through until I get back to shore power. I know I should do better but I like my beer cold! Cheers
