Replace couch with recliners?

Hey folks,

I recently purchased and am now traveling in a 2016 24RKS. One thing my wife and I noticed is how uncomfortable the couch is in the slide. I think I can fit some recliners in the area of the couch but need to know what the plywood support box is covering that supports the couch.

Does anyone know what is under the supporting box? Or has anyone made this modification for this model?

Thanks in advance for your time,

Jinksy

We changed ours out right after we bought it. The fold out couch was very uncomfortable so we got recliners. Best thing we did with the trailer.

From what I could tell the minimum area needed was 60" wide and 30" deep. They aren't cheap but are worth every penny to us.

They are also simple to install, especially if you have a wider door. The old folding couch disassembled into several parts and was easy to get out.

Many "Lazyboy" recliners have a removeable back so the cam fit through some narrower openings.

Did you have to reroute anything?

Did you have a supporting plywood box under your couch? If so, was there anything important underneath - anything that needed to be rerouted like a gas line?

Lazyboy makes apartment size recliners, we have 2 in our slide out and they are great. We did not have the "box" only item was a outlet.

I agree a great upgrade.

I changed out the P.O.S. jack knife sofa in mine but it was a different floor plan. I had a storage box for the power cord under the existing sofa and had to do some mods.

Looking outside in the slideout area, is there any thing that looks like it could impede into the area under the couch?

Maybe the box is just structural to support the couch.

Nothing under ours. The sofa and dinette are in the slide so the floor is flat and fully carpeted.

245RLSW

Rear jack knife couch has the furnace heater under the plywood box.

I would give half a leg to ditch that sofa.
But what to do with the furnace heater is blocking the whole idea

As stated my 23RLSW had the power cord box under the sofa. Just converted the power cord to a detachable type cord and removed the box.

Your right about how uncomfortable these couches are. My existing couch was absolutely worthless.

Replaced it with a loveseat dual recliner from a furniture store.

The backs came off but it was still a little bit of a struggle because of the wall directly in front of the entry door.

A lot of measurements taken before I decided to buy it.

Once I bought it I couldn't return it, so somehow, someway I was going to get in place.

Wish I could, but the placement of the sofa in a 23RB precludes doing so. Also, under one half of the sofa is the heater and the heat vents to the bedroom and the living area.

What I want to do is take the cushions up to the Foam Store in the Airpark near me and get some quality foam to replace what's current in the sofa.

Steve,

Loved that upgrade when you did it and posted it - way to go! Question: Does that love seat/recliner block the kitchen drawers? I'm sure it does when the recliner is extended, but how about when it's in "normal" position?

You know I'm asking because we also have a 23RLSW.

Thanks,

Roger

Hope that works for you. As far as mine, no amount of work or money was going to make my factory sofa feel comfortable to me.

Just a awkward seating position.

Roger, yes it does. But the comfort out weighs the drawer problem as far as I'm concerned.

I could have off centered the new couch to the right to get more room for the drawers but figured it wouldn't look right.

The drawers open far enough to allow enough access for me.

Here's a couple of photos.

The type and model of new sofa will dictate how much room you will have opening the drawers.

Thanks for the additional pix. Alas, DW would kill me if I blocked her kitchen drawers that much. This is a subject I have to keep thinking about.

But that's still a great job!!

Roger

Get zero space recliners so the backs don't move back when reclining. We have a 2016 Jayflight 28RLS, it came with 2 standard Jayco recliners. Both have to be pulled forward from the window 12+ inches or when you recline the back hits the window. The one by the door, when you pull it forward, the chair reclines, but your feet hit the sink console, so you either sit in it without reclining or you have to bend your knees to fit reclined.

The distance from the back wall to the edge of the drawers really doesn't allow a good recliner, even a wall hugger type, which is what I have, to not intrude and obstruct the drawer opening.

That's why the Jayco sofa isn't very comfortable. It's not very deep to keep it from obstructing the drawers.

Again, I could have moved the recliner further right to get more room, but this works OK for me.
