Roof Strength

I have a 2013 314BDS and I love it! I am a pretty big guy and I want to make sure that the roof is strong enough to have me walking around on it. I have a ladder in the back that holds 350lbs. I'm about 280lbs, so I want to make sure that I don't fall through the roof!! Any ideas on the max weight?

When I get on the roof to wash it I crawl on my hands and knees just to distribute the weight a little more evenly.

Same here, 6-4" no walking up there for me! I crawl and play it safe, don't want a nosebleed

some one posted a video some time back about Jayco roofs. It was amazing how much weight it could take! If I come across it, I will post a link.

I weigh 240 and the roof on my 25Z seems fine when I walk on it for cleaning or checking equipment. The camber stiffens it a lot.

A piece of thin plywood to spread your weight might also help.

If you have a truss roof this Jayco video will answer your question.

I waited for the 2013 model to come out so I could get this roof.

I have a 2013 Jayflight 32bhds and I have actually had my dealer check my roof cause it feels weak to me but they said it was normal. I weigh 175 lbs and washed the roof today and next time I take it back to the dealer I will have them recheck it cause it does not feel very strong to me. Not sure if mine is a magnum roof but it is supposed to be 3/8 decking full walk on roof.

I walk upright on mine every time I take the cover off or put it on (before and after a trip). Been doing it for 3 years now without any problems.

Hi does your roof feel spongy between the trusses ? Also have the trusses made lines in your rubber roof material ?

On my trailer there are lines going across the width of the roof showing where the trusses are and between the trusses it feels spongy. I do not like that at all makes me feel like in a few years there will be trouble.

2013 was the first year for the truss roof. You can tell the truss roof as it has an arch to it where the regular roofs are flat. You can see where the truss' are and just take your steps close to them. I am 6'2" and 190 lbs, no weight issues.

FWIW my 2012 JayFlight has a truss roof. Not sure about the "Magnam Truss" in the video. There is no question my roof is "arched" and the 2012 JayFlight Brochure showss pictures and says the following about roof construction....

- 3/8" plywood decking on 4 ½"
arched wood trusses: Moisture
resistant, plywood holds up to rain

- Fiberglass insulation (R-7):
With optional thermal package,
increases R-value to 22

- Seamless rubber roof: Features
one-piece construction, ensuring
better leak protection

I'm 6'1" 260 and although I try not to get on the roof, I did have to crawl up there to install my MaxAir vent and it felt stable.

The change wasn't to a truss but to a thicker truss with truss plates and knee wall plates at the edges. Mine is rock solid.

I'm 6 and 250. I just wouldn't feel good about all that weight up there. DW is 5-5 and 104. She goes up the ladder and takes a look-see for debris now and then. I had a man we hire for fencing, etc., put on the Maxxairs.

2014 WH 30DSRE magnum roof feels solid as advertised except for the 2 or 3 feet toward the front where the arch levels out as it meets the front cap. That flat section [still roof not cap] feels real spongy and I didn't feel comfortable walking on it. OK if I stayed on the arched areas. Anybody familiar with how the transition section of the roof is supported?
