Running lights not working... Truck side or trailer side?

The running lights on my Swift 154bh have stopped working. But the blinkers and brake lights still work.

I can run a jumper wire from the 12v terminal to the running lights on the trailer plug and the running lights work. If I leave the jumper wire in the plug and I connect the trailer plug to the truck, everything works fine (except the trailer lights stay on all the time).

Is it a problem on the truck side or the trailer side?

Any ideas what the problem could be? A corroded ground somewhere?

Thanks for the help. This just started and we're heading out for Christmas in a couple days. Local service dept is closed.

I would start with the electrical plugs trk/trl. Check this site http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx
Also most auto parts stores have an inexpensive pin tester that you plug into your connectors will tell you if everything is working and can save you a lot of trouble. Good luck.

EVERYTIME I hook up to my dads flatbed trailer to move the tractor... I blow the running lights fuse under the hood of the pickup.

Like clockwork, I need to replace the fuse before towing the camper.

When troubleshooting, always start at the simplest point of failure, and work your way into the most complex.
8 times out of 10, its a blown fuse, 1 times is a loose ground, and the last 1 times is the camper.

Agree with ctbailey, check the underhood fuses on the truck. There is normally a seperate fuse for the trailer lights. If that fixes it, then fails again, there is a short in the wiring of the trailer somewhere.

It has to be on the truck side. They work if he puts a jumper in place.

it will be a fuse under the hood. You didnt say what kind of truck you have. However our Chevy lot truck blows these things about once a week. Our FORD lot truck blows them about every two weeks. We dont have a Dodge truck, but we get several inquiries, so I assume that Dodge blows them frequently also.

Since they work when you use a jumper wire it is the truck side... Since you have not posted what kind of truck you own it is hard to say much more.. but it has to be a fuse somewhere I am betting..

Now I have a Dodge Truck for many years and pull all kinds of trailers and I have never blown a fuse. Must be living right!

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I've narrowed the problem down to the circuit protector box that the Reese dealer installed.

There's power going into the box when I turn the running lights on, but no power coming out of it. I checked all other lights the same way and they work fine.

I can't find any info about the "Super Duty Circuit Protector" online. Any idea what would cause it to go out? Possibly a bad one or some other problem in the wiring?

Oh, I'm pulling it with a 2002 Toyota Tundra V8 with 80k miles. I checked all my fuses and they're all good.

I always keep my plug coated with die electric grease. It helps keep corrosion from getting in the plug. It could be a bad ground put a jumper cable from the truck frame to the trailer frame where you have no paint like a bolt head. If the lights come on you have a bad ground.
