What is an EMS?
An EMS (Energy Management System) is a more advanced version of a surge protector that can also detect other electrical problems that could cause damage. You should really get an EMS. They are well worth the extra cost. Both units are available as portable plug-in and hardwired products.

It’s actually “electrical” management system but yes, it is worth the cost. There are several good brands out there (do a search above for EMS) but they will protect you from not only surges but low voltage, open grounds, etc. Cheaper than new components in your rig.

I've only needed an extension cord one time in 40 years. In Canada. They rented them

Oh yeah, got one! and, always use it! Camping World ~ $110. Just never heard it referred to a EMS. Mine is not only surge protection but shows quality of electricity i.e. reversed neutral, open ground and so on. True story. . . brother-in-law alerted campground to bad electricity and they moved him to new site. Recently read good advice . . . check electricity BEFORE going through all the motions of set-up!

Actually an EMS will provide more protection and information than just your basic surge protector. They cost more than $200 but, as an example, if it keeps from burning up my AC from an under-voltage connection, it’s worth it.

We camped at a fairgrounds for the Walnut Valley Festival a few years ago, our spot requires the use of an extension cord to make it to the power pole. We had a massive storm roll through our last night, our connection was underwater, literally like a foot of standing water. Our camper kept plugging along and nobody was electrocuted.

this is what we rigged up! Home depot buck that we place upside down and drilled 2 holes in each side. Keeps the connections water free and off of the ground.

Just a Safety PSA. Even though a good extension cord doesn't necessarily shock anyone when submerged in water, it certainly could and if that happens the shock could be deadly. This happens more often with a bad cord or poor connection with one or more of the contacts in the plugs.

To be as safe as possible, keep the connection above ground level so it doesn't have the ability to be submerged in rain water and also protected as daisygirl does. In addition, keep the power off at the pedestal until all connections are made (or disconnections are made) by using the pedestal's circuit breaker and don't turn on or off that breaker if you are standing in water. ~CA
