rv outside handle

we have a new tt and jayco has a handicap type handle on the outside of the door that can be placed against the door or against the rv body and then in the middle for a handle grab handle. If someone wanted to play a prank on another person who has this handle and they were to move the handle against the door when someone is inside would the person inside be able to open the door and get out. This seems to me to maybe be a potential hazard if the handle were used to lock someone inside. If you have one of these let me know what you think.

Fairly certain it only "locks" into position when it is extended 90 degrees from the trailer. Try putting it against the door and opening the door from the outside. It should just rotate back to 90 degrees and lock in.

It has the same size detent to hold it in all 3 positions. If it didn't have any in the storage positions then it would just swing open during travel. My new White Hawk doesn't have that type of handle, but the Eagle that I just got rid off did.

Edit: I just looked at some photos online and it appears that the detent to hold it open is deeper than the ones to hold it closed.

Did try it in my White Hawk. Door will not open. Very strong spring holds the handle in place, which is what you would expect for it provide assistance in entering and exiting the trailer. I have a second door without such a handle, so no problem.

D'oh... didn't even think of that. I'm surprised there is a detent to lock it against the door though. Seems... interesting, to say the least. I might have some fun with my buddies next camping season !

I tried it on my 2014 WhiteHawk 30DSQB.....it is made to be placed in 3 different positions.....when positioned in front of the door the door cannot be opened......when we went thru our demo with our dealer, he said to always place it in front of the door when traveling as a safety measure to keep door from opening accidently while moving....one should be able, on our model, to open kitchen window next to door, remove screen, and reach outside and move the handle if someone were to lock you inside.....haven't tried that yet but I think I could reach it if necessary.

I tried it on my Jayco Eagle. It pushes it right open. The detention when in the stored position is not as deep.

Pretty sure ours locks into push. Originally our dealer told us to put it over the door in case the door would come open. I did that for the trip home and haven't done it since for three reasons. 1.) I've never had a door come open in the 30 years I've been around campers 2.) It left a mark on the door trim and the handle where it was rubbing 3.) I have another door on the camper that doesn't have one of the handles to hold it closed and it stays closed just fine. Therefore, it now goes back toward the wall and doesn't rub anything.

Much to my surprise the door would not open with the handle there..

jwstewar: The door on my Keystone TT would routinely pop open going around a corner.. so I always put the handle against the door.. Mind you Jayco builds a better product so I dont envision having the same problem I had with the other hunk of junk... (passenger side wall fell off going down the highway when the RV was 4 years old)

I had heard that this was a "prank" that can happen at CGs over holiday weekends that usually involve alcohol so when I looked into them decided to add it just to the living room door, and not on the bedroom since we rarely use it anyway.

I believe the mount can be modified a bit so that it will move when you push from inside by filing off some of the plastic. Start out very conservatively and test it as you work it down.

In the event of a real emergency, that handle will not slow down my 240 lb body.
