Securing the Cargo Area

Hello everyone,

I'm a new RV owner--first time--and have a 2007 Jayco JayFlight 25RKS. I have done quite a bit of online research about those cargo hatch doors with the infamous CH751 key. I am considering changing those cam locks to a tubular cam from someplace like Industrial Lock and Hardware. However, as many point out, the cargo doors are flimsy and easily pried open.

Understanding the cargo will be taken, is there a way to secure the rest of the interior? I'm thinking that if there's a way to secure the folding queen bed frame ... ? Maybe just a padlock and hasp?

I'll be living in the RV and working, and going to my real home on the weekends to a nearby city, leaving the RV unattended. Eventually my family will join me and we'll get a new home in the new city, but for the several months of this temporary situation I'd sure like to figure out a way to secure the living area from cargo-entry thieves.

Any suggestions?

I have (2) ideas....(If you can get to the cargo door from the interior)

First - you could mount one or two of these on the inside of the door(s) and throw the bolt (from the inside) after locking....



My second idea would be to screw a couple of eyebolts into the bottom door frame and slide a rod through the eyebolts.

What does it really matter? Your main door is made out of Styrofoam so it isn't like they aren't hard to go through either. Locks on a camper are joke. The only thing they do is slow folks down a few seconds. Here at the house we don't even lock the door to the camper. Figure if they want in they are going in and at least they aren't tearing the camper up. We had an alarm go off on the house a few months back (daughter didn't close the door tight) and the alarm company couldn't reach us. When we got home the Sheriff was here, they checked the camper noting that it was unlocked and agreed with my assessment of why I don't lock it. And yes it has 2 flat panel TVs and a Playstation in it along with all of the normal "camping" stuff.

I agree that a determined thief will get in, and without too much difficulty. However, if you have a deterrence (i.e. additional lock or something) perhaps the thief will simply go to the next RV--maybe yours since it's not locked--and leave mine alone?

I didn't say we don't lock it in the campgrounds, but here at home it is never locked. We are out in the country and it sits on the other side of my 30x48 pole barn. So it is pretty hidden from our house. Other than our dog barking they could be there and we would never know it.
