selling via pay pal

I am purchasing a new Jayco and listed my old trailer on Craigslist. I got a reply last evening from someone who says they are in the military and buying it as a surprise for a cousin and want to pay $17,000 on pay pal and then pick it up right away. I have never used pay pal and am wondering if anyone has experience with this. I am worried it might not be legit. They are willing to pay asking price without actually seeing the trailer.

Scam. Paypal gives buyers a lot of power after the sale.

From what I've heard and read about Craigs list and they all read just like you wrote, ]I would stay as far away as possible from that situation . Don't know exactly how it works but you will loose!!

That guy just wants to have fun because in the last couple years he's offered to buy my last dirt bike, a jet ski, and the camper I'm selling now lol

I only sell on Craigslist in person and for cash. I wouldn't use PayPal for anything.

I use paypal to buy items on line as I love the protection it gives me, as well as when I sell items on e bay.

I would never use paypal for a large purchase or sale of a TT or car etc as paypal has far to much control.

If the person is legit I would have them send me a certified cheque by over night courier and when the cheque clears they can come and pick up the trailer and complete the paper work.

Scam! Run away! You are wise to be suspicious.

Google Search on a phrase from your post

Like most things, if it seems too good to be true, most likely it's not.

I am a Paypal account user and also a seller on Ebay. I have been using Paypal for over ten years without any issues, and is my most preferred method of payment from buyers on Ebay. For one to have a Paypal account, he/she must have a valid checking account, as well as a valid credit card account as an alternative form of payment. If you have an account on Paypal, it will transfer money from the buyer to your checking account within 3 business days.

Although Craigslist is somewhat risky, I too have sold several items on it--but for cash only. If this buyer is legit and offering $17k for your trailer, then one test you can do with him/her is to ask for either an earnest money of $1,000 or a down payment of $5,000. Then, once you have received the deposit via Paypal, then you know it's legit.

Feel free to PM me if you need more info on Paypal.

Thanks,
Keith

The issue really isn't using Paypal. I use it all the time. The issue is that based on the wording of the offer I recognized this as a common and well publicized scam. Check the link in my previous post. You'll have to read up on the scam to understand how they rip people off.

Thanks. I do agree that there are tons of scammers on Craigslist. I have recently got a phishing email on a grill I put up for sale. My answer was to the original question of Paypal being a safe method or not.

Cash and carry only on Craig's List........and be careful at that. Done a fair bit of business on CL but have always been cautious. Sold my last two 5ers that way but got to know the buyers first and only accepted cash or cashier check from local bank.
I use PayPal for eBay transactions or online shopping.

The guy is scamming you!!!!!

Scam!

Got the same offer last fall when selling trailer on Craig's list. Updated my listing to read in bold all caps: Unless you are willing to come see this in person and pay in cash don't waste my time.

The scammers cut back after I did that.

How does this scam work if they are paying with Paypal and the money has been transferred to your account? I`m just trying to understand how they profit from it.
