Sewer hookup: open or closed

This is a best practices question. When using a full hookup site, is it best to leave the black tank valve open (continuous drain) or closed with tank chemicals in there (periodic drain)? In my mind, I can make an argument either way, but am wondering what the best practice is.

Always closed, so the solids mix with the liquids. Otherwise you'll get the famous poop pyramid, and once it dries, good luck flushing it out.

Actually, after dumping the black tank, you should run at least 5 gallons into the tank (plus deodorizer), to give a base of liquid for any solids to mix with. Many people send some Dawn, Pinesol and other slippery fluids in, to keep everything sloshing around.

Always fill black tank then open, if you leave it open the solids may sit as the liquid flows by, this can make you a nice mess

Keep it CLOSED until it is full then open when dumping. Doing it the other way will get you a big mountain of crap piled below the stool. Do it long enough and the pile reaches the bottom of the toilet and you have a major mess to clear out.

Enjoy the journey

As stated above, wait until tank is at least 3/4 full l so there is enough water to make all the nasty stuff flow out.

The "3/4 Rule" has been the suggested guideline for next to forever in the annals of RVing.

On the same note, you can leave the gray water open while hooked up. Just try to remember to close it the night before you leave. Then you can douche out your hose with the soapy gray water after the poo tank has been emptied.

If you did that then the question is moot😂

Last but not least save the shower water for last to wash everything out of the hose. Never use the site water supply to wash the hose sewer out.

You should read some of the facebook camping forums, there is even recipes for 'poo juice' to put in your tanks

Why not? Waste of water or better products in the gray water for rinsing the pipe (or something else I haven't thought of)?

I think he means to not use the same hose for your fresh water and then sewer flush

That makes sense and that's my practice. Thanks.

What I mean is that you should not take the 4 inch pipe and hold it up to the cg fresh faucet to run water in it. Your hose can pollute the campground water and the next camper will be the poor beneficiary of the germs you leave.

It a sanitary thing.

Another term is Poop Mountain". It's harder to get out that the plastic piece they leave in when the hole is cut.

In a site with full Hook-ups I always keep the Black Tank valve closed until it is at least 3/4 full. As for the Grey Water valve: if it is a short stay I will keep it closed. If I am there for a longer stay I will open the grey water Valve and close it a day or two before we leave. I want to use the grey Water to rinse out the hose.

I have two grays and a black. I keep them all closed and check the gauges daily. When I hit 3/4 on the black, I open all three in succession, black first then the others. If the bath gray gets full before the others (more likely with wife showers!, just my experience), I just empty it.

I would love to hear your argument for keeping the BT valve open. Inquiring mind(s) want to know.
