You will hear how it is not advisable to use the slide while it is closed followed by folks who have used their couches and dinettes for two score years without a problem. Then we'll hear it will void your warranty.

If you do decide to use it, realize it is in a weakened position and be gentle. Watch for any flexing and twisting as you sit on it.

Okay, I think I need some education.

We have the same trailer (166FBS) and have scoured the manual for any warnings on using the slide in its retracted position. I found none, but that is not to say there are not any in existence.

My thoughts would be it is acceptable to sit on the couch as there would be more support directly under the slide. That support being the trailer frame and crossmembers.

When the slide is extended (12 inches for ours), it becomes a cantilever and then weight/load restrictions become more critical. The restrictions are in place as full extension results in support to be at its weakest point.

Plus, you see many reviews for trailers that when stopped at rest areas, have room to get to/use facilities without extending the slide.

Am I incorrect on this? If so, I would gladly change what I am doing.

A previous post from 1-6-2017 on this forum-

And without further ado, here is the official Jayco customer service answer:

Good Afternoon.
I personally see nothing wrong with it at all. I used to build travel trailers and we used to sit and work with the slide outs in and we never had any problems at all. I have even spoken with my supervisor and she has even said that there is no problem with yall sitting in there and having lunch with the slide out in.
I hope that this has been some help. Have a great weekend!

Thank you and have a Blessed Day.

As usual a online search lead to many posts, some saying it will ruin your slide's floor to "we design our slides to be used in or out"
Grand design reply on their forum was-
"I received a response from a GD regional tech the same day. It is fine to sit in slide out when fully extended or retracted. He did say you would not want to bear weight on it when it was partially out."

I had the same question and contacted Jayco. Below is the response I received from them.

"Good morning,

There is nothing wrong with sitting inside the unit while the slide out is not extended.

You may have lunch in there.

Thank you,

The brand/model/type/size of slide, RV floorplan, options, etc., may influence the type of usage under a retracted slide condition.

My 2018 Jay Flight 24RBS has a Lippert Through-Frame slide (7ft long) that when fully retracted the slide floor is 'raised' (at an angle) approximately 1 1/2" above the main floor.

I ordered my 24RBS with table/chairs in lieu of the standard built-in dinette, but my slide floor 'flexes' downward notably if I step on it which IMO isn't a desirable condition for casual use. Maybe the standard built-in dinette provided additional mounting structure for the slide floor (thus no floor flex?).

I took two 30" pool noodles, did a little 'noodle' trimming, and slide them snugly (perpendicular to slide floor edge) under the slide floor when in tow. Slide floor now doesn't flex should I step on it, but I elect not to use the slide area when retracted.

Don't step on the edges when they are in.
