Slide topper or No slide topper?

We have a 29rlds with two slides. Do any owners out there add slide toppers
to their unit? If so what brand is the most reasonable and how much$$ to install.
Thx

Without slide toppers you must get on the roof each time before bringing in the slide or risk leaves, pine needles, bugs and/or water coming off inside your rig during transit.

FYI, this is the reply I received from a Jayco Customer Service rep when asked if I could install a slide topper on my 2016 White Hawk 24RKS:

"Due to this not being an option on your unit, your unit will not be backed with the proper material for this installation. This modification, to this unit, has also not been factory tested by Jayco and cannot be recommended or suggested. I apologize I could not have offered more assistance in this matter."

That's their way of saying there may not be enough solid material in the walls to mount them to.

Lightweight trim with weatherstripping extends along the top and around the entire slide out. This appears to be the issue, the wall and header within seem solid enough. Anyway, just reporting what Jayco said about my White Hawk. I'll follow that advice.

FWIW, Jayco is installing toppers on the 355MBQS I just ordered while it is being manufactured so I guess it would depend on the model.

I believe it does depend on the model line. I spoke to Jayco directly and was told they wont install toppers on the Jay Flight line. I asked if it had to do with support for a topper not being present and was told yes. He didn't get specific and I didn't ask for a lot of details because I only needed a yes or no if they would do it. My dealer however said they would do it once the trailer was in their hands. I haven't decided what I'll do yet.

Slidetopper

I have a 2013 White Hawk 26 DSRB. I bought a slide topper "Carefree Slideout cover ll". My wife Peggy and I installed it ourselves. It has been on since Nov. 2013. We've had absolutely no problems what so ever.

I had requested and received Drawings from Jayco for the side walls and the slide wall of our ALUMINUM sided 28BHBE.

The Side wall drawings were correct and have a large header over the slide opening but the Slide wall Drawing I received was not for our EXACT slide as the window sizes are different. I am getting close to having the time to install a topper, because of the concern (mine included) there is no backing I sent them an email again for specific clarification on whether the Slide wall has any support for the brackets.

Sent them a photo of our camper and the specific Dometic brackets I would need to mount.

I believe if you have the Fiberglass Sides it would be less of an issue because of the sides being wood and glass themselves, I know of other 28BHBE owners who have installed a Topper on a FGS JayFlight but have not seen any ALUMINUM sided JayFlights with a Slide Topper.

If someone has one please chime in, I will post the info I receive back...

When we camp locally, we usually camp at Mistletoe State Park in Ga. on Clark Hill lake. But the photo was taken on the South Carolina side of the lake at Modoc C.O.E. camp ground.

Ok, we have a 2015 24FBS. I have a slide topper that a friend of mine gave me. He works at Jayco. It was a new topper from another Jayco TT that was a warranty replacement. There wasn't anything wrong with it. I'll be installing it next weekend. He told me there would be "enough material" to screw into.

Hi Mark-

Had CW install a slide topper on my 24FBS last year. Works great! You will really appreciate it but sometimes you still need to clean some "stuff" off of it. CW installed it on the same line as the drip cap they took off the side of the TT which covered all the holes.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

We got the topper with ours. We like it. We have heard people who don't have one say they don't feel they need it, but we have never heard anyone with one say they wish they hadn't bothered.

Any dealer will likely say no issue installing one. Jayco doesn't respond to posts. So call Jayco and see if you get the same answer I did. I'd be curious. I want a topper but don't want issues down the road if the screws start pulling out of the slide wall because the support isn't there... I'm very torn...

I completely understand your concerns, but I do believe you can find someone who will install these for you. While they do need some backing to screw into the stress on these is not near what an awning is and I'm sure that it can be done somehow.

I have had three RV's with slides. The first one did not have toppers and I didn't even know what they were or why I would want them. We had stayed at a campground and had some high winds. There were tons of sticks, pine needles, pine cones and general debris on the top of my slide and I was unaware. When I went to retract it it was a mess, sticks under the seals and jammed pinecones. It was all my fault, it just never occurred to me to clean the top of the slide. Another camper came over and helped me and showed me slide toppers. I had them installed at camping world about a month later. This was on a lightweight aluminum sided trailer by forest river and they were able to do it and I never had any issues with the toppers.

Hope that helps.
