Spiders and Propane

After more than one service bill to fix a non operating camper furnace/ water heater and home gas fireplace over the years I decided to get pro-active. In most cases it was spiders building their nests either in pilot lines or the main orifice.
Apparently the little critters love the smell of propane.
For the past 3 years I have been spraying "Raid Max Flying Insect Killer" in the floor of the fridge and water heater compartments and near the gas burner assembly being careful not to get any spray on electrical parts. I do this about twice during camping season and before the winter lay-up.

The spray is made by SC Johnson with no CFC's and I likely purchased this in the States as we seem to have banned most of the effective chemicals that worked in controlling weeds and pests here in Canada.
So far I have been spider nest free and as an aside I leave the pilot lit on home gas fireplace and turn it on a few times during the summer to keep the spiders out.

P.S. Don't call me if it doesn't work !

You can thank your New World Order government for that.

I don't think the spiders are as attracted to the odor of propane as they are the small orifices. They like the size of the openings as they are most suited to the economical building of their nest. Small hole = less material and easier to defend.

Mothballs also seem to work well place a couple inside the door of the water heater and toss a few more into the furnace area..
