Square Drive Screwdriver

Received my new TV mount to match the one on the side of my 2016 27DSRL White Hawk. Screws had square hole for driving (not phillips & not flat head). Learned from my neighbor that it is common for RV Screws. Fortunately he had taken a square shank screwdriver and took the tip off to make himself a square ended screwdriver that fit what I needed to do. I now have TV in the bedroom

I see Amazon has this type screwdriver in sizes 0, 1, 2, & 3. Does anyone know which one matches RV Screws?

Hate to order the wrong size for future projects.

#2 robertson drive, I think. Would have to go look. You can get them at any hardware place. I use the bits and cordless drills or impact driver.

They use this type screw head because it it less prone to stripping. You can buy the bits at any hardware store. I got several and use one in my onboard 18v driver and epoxied another into one end of one of those multi screw/nut driver hand screw type drivers. I removed the smaller end bit and glued in the square bit. That way I have a flat/phillops on one end and the square bit on the other end. Chose an orange handle so its easy to spot in the tool box. That way you can handle the square oem screws and also any regular screws you have added during a mod.

I have a set of square bits but a regular screwdriver blade that fits across the square diagonally always works for me in a pinch.

I used to work in the fastener industry, so I know a thing or two. Back like 100 years ago, they were competing technologies, but the Robertson drive never caught on south of the border. That's why there's the difference; Jayco is probably using a Canadian supplier for their fasteners.

The place I worked at was also licensed to manufacture screws with a driver called Quadrex, which is a hybrid between the two:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...drives#Quadrex

You can think of the driver sizes as extra small, small, medium, and large. Most of what you're going to encounter in a standard #8 screw will be a #2 driver size.

Actually sq dr screws are used in many industries...used literally tons in my cabinet shop for building cabinets. Almost all the RV industry uses them also. They are available most anywhere that sells industrial screws. Torx is slowly taking over industry as they are even less likely to strip than a sq head.

One other neat fact about Robertson. There is a standard for handle color for each size:
#00 = Orange handle; #1 and 2 screws
#0 = Yellow; #3-4 screws
#1 = Green; #5-7
#2 = Red; #8-10
#3/4 = Black; #12+

Makes it really easy to find the correct driver on your belt or in the toolbox.

And yes, #2 (red) is the most common size for wood/cabinet work. #1 (green) is pretty common in electrical.

The #2 should work fine. That's I have.

I would recommend picking up a #2 square drive bit or screw driver for your tool box.

Nearly every screw in your TT uses this configuration.

The circuit breakers you buy now use the #2 robertson driver. Also outlets and switches.

We bought a mobile home in 1976. It was assembled with those square-headed screws so I bought a screwdriver at the mobile home supply store. We sold that trailer in 1982, but being a pack rat, that red-handled driver was still in my tool box in 2014 when we bought the Greyhawk. Never knew what it was called though.

All RV manufacturers use them here in the SSA. So do many manufactured home manufacturers. They are also popular in furniture manufacturing here. They are ideal for use with power drivers.

I personally prefer the Robertson drive screws and use them regularly on my rv mods and other projects. The door face trim on my mod thread was secured with #1 Robertson drive screws. The belt rail exterior aluminum trim mod was #2 ss Robertson drive screws. I just like them.

You local hardware store will likely have bins near the registers with handfulls of these bits (and others as well) for spare change. #2 is the one you need for RV use.
