Stock Hitch

Hi All,

I have read that the stock hitch that comes on a Jayco Eagle HT TT can take up to 300lbs. Is that tongue weight or towing weight? I have a small "Stinger" trailer with a motorcycle. Total weight of bike and trailer is about 1000 to 1200lbs with an about 150lbs tongue weight. Do any of you use your hitch like this? What has been your experience with that? Thoughts? Thanks.

I have a 2018 321rsts and when I bought it I had the dealer take it to a welding shop to put on a heavier receiver and the welding shop said the one that was on it was better than the one they were going to put on.
I tow a 12 foot trailer with my Polaris General on it. No problem. Hope this helps you out.

The receiver on the TT is for a cargo rack and not towing. Does your rig have the 4 prong wiring at the hitch?

The only trailer hitch receiver was on the HT FW's and they even come with the wiring.

This is from the HT TT spec:

rear 2" receiver,

This if from the HT FW spec:

rear 2" towing receiver,

Mine has the round plug not the flat 4 prong one.
If you don't feel comfortable with what's on it take it to any welding shop and have them put on anything you like. Problem solved.
Trailer and my sxs weigh over 2000# and I've towed it thousands of miles with no issues.

Welcome Aboard!

Looks like you have a TT, and not of 5ver. Those hitches are only designed for a cargo rack. 300 pounds is all it can handle.

Most states do not allow double towing if the first trailer is not a 5ver. I would strongly recommend verifying your state laws, and any state laws in route to where you are travelling. It is illegal here in Minnesota, but I still have seen rigs on the interstate with illegally towing setups. So just because you saw someone doing it does not mean it is legal, so please do verify.

Edit:
This map is old, so I do not know if it is still valid or not. But it looks like most of the east coast does not permit double towing.

The map above looks correct. Funny thing is Florida doesn't allow it but when I'm down there I see it all the time. Honestly I believe that state and local officials aren't really interested in stopping someone tandem towing unless you're doing something really stupid. Some states like Indiana limit the 2nd trailer to recreational equipment like a boat, snowmobile or ATV trailer. I tandem towed a boat behind 3 of my last 4 travel trailers for 12 years here without incident after having a welding shop fabricate hitches for each.
OP, a quality welding shop might be able to beef up that hitch so you could tow with it. The guy that did mine also tapped into one of the tail lights for the 4 pin connector.

Depends on what mood the LEO is in. People have been stopped, but as you said not often.

I bought a 2021 334 rlok. A friend bought a 5th wheel with the same floorplan. I noticed the hitch is the same in all respects. Welds, style, everything. He has a sticker that says tongue weight 300 pounds. Same as mine. His has wiring harness for trailer and sticker to tow 3000 pounds.

5th wheel can tow. Tt cannot. Both have 300 pound tongue weight.
