Surge Guard 30A Model 34730 or 34830

Hi,

I am interesting in buying a surge guard 30A portable Surge Suppressor (model 34730 or Model 34830). Could someone tell me what electrical safety certification designations it has marked on the body. (ie. UL, CSA, ETL, NSF, MET, etc). I want to ensure it is approved for use in my Canada.

Thanks

Bill

Can't help you there, Bill, but you might want to check out Progressive Industries' 30 amp EMS. IMHO it does so much more to protect your rig than a Surge Suppressor.

Jeff

The TRC SurgeGuards the OP references are 30A complete EMS. They are not the simple surge protectors.

Bill .. If someone doesn't chime in shortly, I'll head over to my storage yard to check tomorrow, this has peaked my interest. I went online to TRC's site, very little mention of UL, CSA, etc. I did find a marketing brochure that had the UL trademark next to the hardwired versions but not the portable. Seems odd the would pay for test and cert on the hardwired but not the portables.

Thanks Clubhouse,

I managed to reach TRC sales support. They have confirmed that the 34730 and 34830 have no electrical certifications whatsoever. As a result, not legal for use or sale in canada. (see my recent post on another thread for details).

SurgeGuard has a couple surge suppressors (but without under/over monitoring) that are UL approved; making these acceptable for use in canada. However, I am trying to find a device that does over/under monitoring in addition to surge protection. So far no luck. I have a ping into Progressive to have them advise what certifications their EMS models carry.

Although I'd like to protect my appliances from electrical issues; using a non-approved surge suppressor creates a much bigger financial risk than the surge suppressor will protect against. ie. Criminal negligence, voided insurance, financial liability for injuries or property damage to others, etc.

FWIW, I don't think any of the portables are UL. Progressive's isn't either.

Just curious......

Why does Canada object to unlisted protection devices? Especially the non-hardwired ones. The definitely won't cause damage to other peoples equipment. It would seem that warranty/insurance would be pleased that someone is providing protection to their equipment.

Is this another lawyer instilled fear issue? Or just governmental ignorance of the issue?

I have a hardwired 30 amp Progressive Industries EMS, it is UL certified. As stated above the non hardwired ones do not have certification.

If you check out other threads the overwhelming consensus is to go with Progressive Industries products. They have a lifetime gurantee.
