Progressive Industries. They make a few models (portable, mounted, 30 amp, or 50 amp). Much more than just surge protection.

1x for Progressive. We've had a pole-mount 30A and a hard wired 50A.

I only have Progressive Industries power protection in my RVs. Progressive has both surge and power protection devices. Their power protection units protect against surges and a lot more.

I have the EMS-HW30C with remote display. This is a hard-wired unit that I don't have to plugin, worry about theft or leave behind. All Progressive Industries units have lifetime warranties.

Progressive also has excellent customer service. Left a message on the 800 support line on a Sun afternoon, got a call back within an hour.

I'm new to owning a travel trailer, but what's the purpose of the surge protector? Just protection from the camp ground?

That's all that a surge protector does. Items like the progressive industries EMS will protect your rv from high voltage, low voltage, reversed or bad ground, and of course surges. I've used mine at families driveways where yuo'd think power was good when actually the garage outlet, in one case, had a reversed ground, and in another instance had low voltage. Both brother in laws said that they never had problems using those outlets but both situations would be bad on some electronics.
Power in campgrounds can fluctuate from demand, as I've heard, once the temps get high and every site has air con running. If voltage drops to the compressor in your A/C you can stress it.
It also serves as a no brainer circuit tester. I will test an outlet before I or a neighbor hooks to it. Simple error codes on the screen give you the results.

Thanks for the heads up. Should I be looking for the 30A or 50A?

You want to look for the one sized to your trailer. I would think 30amp is what you have.

When you get a voltage drop everything has to work harder to operate. It takes the same wattage to operate no matter what the voltage, but as the voltage drops the amps increase, which can cause issues. So if you have a 10% drop in voltage on an AC that typically draws 12 amps, you will then have to draw 13.2 amps to get the same wattage.

Typically voltage is 120 volts. It can range from 122 to 108 or so before you have a major issue. As others have said, when you have a full campground, hot days with everyone running their AC along with other items you can get what many would call a "Brown out". Where power drops and things run harder to produce the same amount of work. A surge protector, depending on what you get, may automatically shut the power off before this can cause an issue. Along with the other protections listed on other posts.

If I could only purchase one item for protection, it would be surge protector. Then water filters etc. JMHO

The chart is for reference only. Some of the data is incorrect. The surge guard 34560 does have reverse polarity protection. Bottom line you should have a surge protector in your rv. Just check the manufacturers website for current and up to date specifications.

Joe campground owner THINKS he knows electricity and when he replaces a damaged plug on a power pedestal often misswires it. It also protects from high and low voltage situations that can harm some of your electronics.. I would never plug into ANY power outlet without having one of these installed..
Remember you get what you pay for so stay away from the cheap (under $200.00) versions..

Surge protectors are crucial. Keeps your electronics safe. A must buy for a new camper. And as most things labeled RV, they can be quite expensive. But well worth the money. Happy camping!

Just to clarify......

Many times, this thread included, the term "surge protector" is used generically. Let's make a clear distinction here.

A "surge protector" in its true sense only suppresses very high, short duration voltage spikes. It does NOT protect you from the more common problems of improper voltage and mis-wiring.

An Electrical Management System (EMS) does much more than a surge protector. In addition to surge suppression it will shut of power for under/over voltage, open ground, open neutral, reverse hot/neutral.

A quick search for "surge" gives me many hits, so I guess I could post this in one of several threads.

Follow-up on my very recent Progressive Industries EMS-TP30C; ordered 4/2/15, received 4/8/15. I installed it that day (or next) and it has already been blown up.

We've had several days of rain, some heavy, and numerous very close lightning bolts. On the way by the camper today I noticed an error code, surge bad - replace unit. After unplugging/replugging it displayed new error messages.

I called Progressive Industries, they were most apologetic, said send it in and they'll take care of it. Excellent company. And it may have saved my camper from catastrophe.
