Surge protector

HI I just purchased a 2017 Jayco White Hawk 24RKS and we pick it up middle of April 2018 . I was wondering if a surge protector is a good thing to purchase and if so which would you suggest.
Also wondering if the White Hawk is a good tt .

Yes you need a protection system to protect all the electronics. Most purchase the Progressive EMS, Made in USA, Lifetime Warranty. They come in a portable and hardwired version, pros and cons to both. Here is a link to it on Amazon, read about all the features its a great protection system. I installed the hardwired system, simple to install, about 30 minutes, many videos on Youtube.

Just bought my progressive EMS from tweetys.com they had the best price with no shipping charges. Amazon kept showing a different unit when I searched because it was a cheaper price. I went hard wired because I would forget it at the campground.

FYI for those looking to purchase a device to protect their RV from electrical gremlins:

The term "surge protector" has come to be used to describe most any device that offers any type of electrical protection.

Important to know that not all so-called "surge protectors" provide the protection you may think they provide.

A true "surge protector" only protects electrical devices from momentary voltage surges or spikes that last less than second. These include switching transients or lightning strikes. A true surge protector offers zero protection from continuous high or low line voltage, improper line frequency, open grounds or reverse polarity---these are the very issues that are most likely to occur in an RV environment.

When you're shopping, one should note a true surge protector (for an RV) typically costs $150 or less. They cost less because they offer much less protection.

Devices that offer true surge protection---plus protection from high/low voltage, improper line frequency, and improper wiring, typically cost $200 or more. These devices are also sometimes called surge protectors (yes, confusing to say the least) . . . . surge guards, electrical management systems, etc.

Make sure you know what kind of protection your "surge protector" is actually providing---before it's too late

I went with the Progressive Industries EMS. Around $250 for the 30 amp portable model. It does a check of the wiring at the shore power post for high/low voltage, bad wiring, missing ground, etc. There is a two minute plus delay before power is allowed to the trailer. This helps protect, say, the A/C if you have a momentary power loss. The A/C will be saved from a jolt of a quick off/on which is very hard on compressors.
It also shows the voltage, amp usage, and hertz. Piece of mind for sure.

I installed the hard wired EMS unit. It was simple to do...see the install video they have for it. No worry of theft or loss.

It's stopped low voltage several times in the last year...great unit.

I ordered an EMS (see CampNow) for my new Whitehawk unit when I purchased it. I used to build homes and was not going to trust my TT to someone who might be doing electrical maintenance part time. I wanted the full voltage protection so purchased this unit: Progressive Industries EMS-PT30C Portable EMS RV Surge Protector - 30 Amp from Amazon. I believe there is a newer model. But, the EMS stopped voltage once that might have destroyed my electronics. Very inexpensive insurance.

Our TT has a 30 amp system. Is there any need to go with the higher capacity 50 amp device? We have stayed at campgrounds where we've had to plug into 50 amp using an adapter plug for our 30 amp rig.

No reason to go with 50amp protection, even plugged into 50amp with a adapter you are only getting 30amps. I do this all the time with no problems.

Definitely get full fledged EMS system. I got the Progressive Industries EMS 30a portable model. There are pros and cons to getting either the portable or hard wired system.

Which ever you choose get one or the other.

And make sure what ever brand you get, that it protects against all electrical issues and not just a surge or spike in electricity.

I went PT30X portable. It has detected low voltage on a number of occasions.

I owned a pole-mount Progressive 30A EMS and bought a hard-wire 50A Progressive EMS when I upgraded to the 5th. I prefer the hard-wired version (with remote display) but both have their advantages. Progressive has an excellent warranty and a customer service/support to match.
