Surge protector and warranty

Do you think adding an inline surge protector on my Jayflight 28bhs will void my warranty? My warranty isn't up until Oct of 2013.

Question Surge protector and warranty

I don't know why it would void it if it's done right, but I'm a Newbie. Best thing would be to contact someone from Jayco. The dealership where we bought ours has a special contact person for warranties, maybe yours does too. We've been checking into what all we need to protect our investment. With all the advertising hype I've been reading for these devices it makes me wonder if we really need this protection or is it something for the after market industry to make $ on. I'm not against buying one, but just don't want to buy something that's not really needed? If the these potential electrical dangers are common at camp grounds, why aren't these surge protectors standard equipment? I have checked posts in this forum and it seems these dangers do exist or some owners have bought into the advertising sales pitch. Considering calling the salesman/warranty contact person at our dealership and ask for their advice. Who do we believe?

I would like to think that an in line unit wouldn't effect the warranty, unless it was the root cause of a particular warranty service claim.

I plan to purchase/install an in-line unit in my Eagle this summer. I haven't had any problems over the years, but since my travels now take me to CG's that I'm not familiar with IMO this increases the risk.

I plan on going with this 30amp PI in-line unit: http://tweetys.com/electrical-manage...re-30-AMP.aspx

I installed one in mine. My guess you would be ok, but you do run the risk of them denying a claim on electrical equipment - such as your microwave or converter if they really wanted to get ticky....In my opinion, your chances are pretty low it will cause you a problem.

Are you talking about installing it inside your TT or just getting one that plugs into the shore power, and then your power plug goes into it? I would recommend the later.

I think it really depends on your comfort level installing it. I chose the internal one because I like the display, as well as less likelihood of it being stolen, plus it is much cleaner in my opinion. I can also easily remove it when I go to tell it.

Now if you are not the type that wants to install something like this...then by all means, the external one is just fine and will give you the same protection and you can be guaranteed not to void your warranty.

Camping World carries the Surge Guard series:

I like the Progressive Industries myself:

Make sure you have a means to secure it if you go with the portable if you don't want it walking off on you. They sell a lock but it's like another $20-25. That's why some folks prefer the hardwired version inside the trailer. It's always available and won't get legs.

I bought the Progressive Industries EMS-PT30C from www.rvupgrades.com
It's an outside type, I also bought a cable/lock to secure it with but haven't felt the need to lock it yet.
Searching will yield many discussions on the levels of protection the various surge protectors give.
If you've had one for years and never had an electrical issue, was it due to the supressor or did nothing happen? I feel better having one, but when I was a young-un I ALWAYS had an STP sticker someplace on my car to prevent roll-overs. Musta worked as I've never had one. :hihi:

Well, I ended up installing mine this weekend. Pretty painless process for what the comfort level will be.

Good to know, if I get stumped installing mine in the next week or so I know who to PM

Mine was delivered yesterday.

Do you have any pics showing the area where you installed your PI surge protector?

Bob

Mike,

Thanks for the nice video reference, hadn't seen it before. I just wish I had some room around my converter/charger to mount my EMS unit like Terry's TT.

My IOTA converter/charger is located on the opposite side of the TT from where my shore power cord comes in, but there is some wiggle room around the outside of the cord box where I hope to mount the EMS.

Bob

Is there any difference in performance or options between the internal and external types? Other than worrying about it growing legs of course?

After installation started having problems with power shutting down even though I have 120 volts. Called Progressive Industries and they are sending out another board on their dime. Talk about great customer service.
