Sway Control for 23RBM

Have done a search of the forums and not found any posts regarding my questions.

Our new Jay Feather 23 RBM has a dealer installed Husky Weight Distribution System. Two questions:

1. Do the bars have to be removed before backing up and if so why?

2. What Sway Control system is best used with this trailer and is it necessary to install two (L & R) control bars?

(OK - I guess that really is four questions but whos counting? )

If your WDH is a Husky Centerline TS than you have sway control built into the trunnion bars when attached.

Your dealer should have gone over the hitching procedure and the features on your WDH.

What wireman said.

If your WDH is a Husky Centerline TS
then...
(1) You DO NOT need to remove the bars before backing up.
(2) Sway control is built into the bars (friction at the pivot in the head and the ends of the bars). Additional sway control should not be needed and would be difficult to add to your hitch.

Thanks Wireman and oldmanAZ - The WDH appears to be the Round Bar WDH. INstructions from the dealer were very disappointing. We went back the next day and had additional things explained but nothing about the hitch. It's a real hard release from the ball but that is another story and I see posts about that elsewhere. After a trip through the Columbia a River Gorge with moderate winds I think I really need the Sway Bar. Any suggestions on one brand or another would be appreciated.

The dealer "through in" the hitch as part of the sales deal. I now think they just put on an inexpensive unit but my knowledge of these things, coming from a motorhome background, leaves a lot of education needed!

Ronroamer,

Welcome to JOF

As mentioned, the WDH spring bars don't require removal or dis-engagement when backing the TT.

Based on your description it sounds like you have a standard Husky WDH "without" integrated sway control.

If your Husky Round Bar WDH looks similar to the following....:

....... Then for your 23RBM you should have one (two not required) friction sway control arm similar to this Husky model (or a Reese brand, etc.)......:

I'm surprised the dealer didn't include the sway control arm with your standard WDH.

Please note for any sway control device to be effective, the WDH should be sized/adjusted properly under loaded TV/TT conditions. I would recommended that a friend who is familiar with adjusting a WDH join you during your first attempt at adjusting a WDH.

Bob

Thanks for the reply. Maybe if I had stalled on the negotiations he would have thrown that in also. He was a really nice guy to deal with but I forgot that he is a Salesman! No names but the dealership was Gauranty in Junction City, OR. To bad they are several hours away or I would go knock on their door!
