Thermal pkg vs Climate Shield

Howdy -

Does anyone know if there are any differences between the "thermal package" option available for the Jay Flight (32 BHDS) and the "climate shield" that comes standard with the Eagle (314 BHDS)?

Jay Flight option sheet says Thermal pkg includes:
- insulated, heated and enclosed underbelly
- foil insulation in roof and slideout floors

Climate Shield video says the following:
- fully enclosed and heated underbelly
- double-sided flex-foil insulation
- dark-tint windows
- durable pex plumbing

It would be nice if there were a technical bulletin available that included R-values, etc.

Thanks in advance!

I was talking to a Jayco rep at the Hershey show last week. He mentioned that the Climate Shield is the better of the two options, but he didn't think it was available on the JayFlights. He also said that Jayco literature doesn't include R values.

Any folks with the Eagle Climate Shield care to chime in on the performance for hot-weather camping comfort?

Anyone with the Thermal package in their JayFlight?

Do folks recommend adding 2nd A/C unit in front bedroom? I think it is probably a given to upgrade the main unit from 13.5K to 15K for these larger bunkhouse models.

NOTE: Our decision is between Eagle 314 BHDS and JayFlight 32 BHDS (with Thermal pkg) and we live in central Texas.

Many thanks!

I have the Eagle climate shield, and I think it makes a bigger difference in cool temps than it does in hot temps. I camp in northern minnesota, and this time of year I can heat the unit with the electric fireplace, shut it off for awhile even, and it will stay comfortably warm for quite sometime. In hot temps though, both a/c units will take turns running. In 80 degree weather an a/c is almost always running. Just doesn't stay cool long at all. For what a second a/c unit costs, I would strongly suggest buying it. Every trailer I own from here on out will have the 2nd a/c.

I've owned lots of RV's. Some with the duel pane windows etc.
I have never had one that cools as good as my current one with thermal shield.
I had it down to 67 in 96 degree day. It would have went lower. We're able to run only ducted at night and it's stays cool, I mean we sleep at 68. We leave our fan on, low speed so the temps stay more even and the on and off noise is gone.
I expect it to heat as good as it cools.

I have a 2013 Jay Flight 25RKS with the thermal package and a 15k AC. I have been living in it here in Southeast NM thru two summers and one winter. My experience has been very good. AC is able to keep inside cool thru the heat and I was able to keep warm thru days in the teens with a 1500w electric heater and limited use of the furnace.

My vote would be to choose the trailer that works best and you should be good, though adding the second AC is probably a good idea.

It's beefed up. 2012 Last year before having to use the added fluid. As far as I know there is nothing you can do to 2013 and up.

dsmith3, the only concern that I have about the 2nd A/C is that you have to upgrade to 50amp service. Depending on how you camp, that could cause problems. Personally I like having 30 amp service because it allows you to stay at more campgrounds. Some places we go either charge more for 50amp or don't offer 50amp sites.

Just something to consider.

When you have 50 amp service with a cheap adaptor you can use 30 or 50 amp service. On a previous RV when I added the second ac in the garage I wired it where I plugged it into the wall. If the park only had 30 amp service I would run ext cord out to regular outlet in outside box to run it.

One can always run at 30 amps in a 50 amp RV - one just couldn't use the 2nd A/C. There are also adapters to get to 50 amp using the pole's 30 amp plus the pole's 20 amp sockets. No big deal.

Well, you learn something new everyday! I would prefer if Jayco gave the option of 50 amp service or a 30 amp and a separate 20 amp household plug. Its my experience that most parks that offer 30 amp also have a 20 amp household plug that would give you 50 total.

I am not sure that it works that way...or at least what I have been told.

You can buy the pig tails at CW that will plug into the 30 and 20 amp services. Not sure it gives you a true 50amp service?

Maybe they do work...Just remember a few years back a big discussion on the plugs on another forum.

I have only the 30amp service on my 28.5, but use one of the 30 to 50amp adapters. That seems to work pretty good.

They only work if used on "non GFI" 20 amp outlets.

Hey Grumpy, see you are from Cinn. You familiar with Lawrenceburg, Aurora, Rising Sun IN? Where my Smith clan is from.

I bought one of the 30 /20 adapters and when I tried it it didn't work... my air conditioner didn't turn on ... then I hooked the 50 to 30 dog bone to it and it worked fine so something at least in the 2015 338 rets doesn't jive with that adapter
