Thread lock on pigtail?
Hello All,
I had a leak in my one of the pigtails (supply hose) running between a propane tank and the regulator. The original pigtail threads have a red substance on them. Maybe thread lock? The red stuff looks kind of crusty (see attached photo) and it was fairly easy remove the old pigtails.
My question is what should I use on the new pigtails? A couple videos I found didn’t show them using any thread lock or tape. I’m not sure the red stuff on my old lines was thread lock. My experience with red thread lock is that it can be very hard to remove. One usually has to use heat to break the seal. I just put a wrench to them and they came right off.

They do make a "Red" pipe dope for gas and oil.

I use yellow teflon tape for all of my propane connections. When I used to remodel homes/businesses I often found that pipe dope shrank or cracked after many years. I have yet to ever see Teflon tape deteriorate.

LP / Nat gas rated teflon tape is yellow, and should be stated so on the roll. Probably not good to use the white. Look for LP / Nat gas rated pipe sealant, either tape or liquid.

My local gas company did some work at my house. I noticed that they were using this stuff, but in a much bigger container. I figured if it’s good enough for them it will work for me. I found a tube of it at HD and I use it on my gas connections.

Thread lockers should not be used on pipe threads, only sealants on pipe threads. If it's a tapered-type fitting, it gets assembled dry.

I would not use teflon tape on any pining where a regulator is in the line. While it may help seal, it also leaves shreds behind when fittings are replaced that can migrate into the regulator and make it fail. Use gas rated pipe sealant.

Liquid pipe sealant diries out and crumbles also.
