Tire pressure on TT and TV

Want to check as I'm confused.

It says max psi on trailer is 50. On truck 40.
When I got it at dealer psi on TT was 50, so I kept it like that for 1st 2 years.

Had a slow leak(nail) in one TT wheel (2 axles) n took it to just tires to switch out w spare/fix leak.
They chewed me out for having it at(or 2-3psi under) max.

Now I keep pressure at 42-ish. Also I under inflate TV 5 psi from max.
I live in So Cal so it's hot so TT is stored outside/exposed.

Some YouTube sites say I should be at 50???

What is right for optimal safety and also smooth ride

Thanks in advance

Always run your TT tires at max psi. per the manufacturers. They were designed to run at max psi.

Great info. I was told I was inflating wrong this whole time by a tire shop n it threw me for a loop.
The advice still feels wierd to overinflate over by 3psi if the tires are super hot.

Any advice on TV inflation? Should that be max? We are in hot climate and air expands, right?

Run them at max psi or maybe a 1-2 less. Under inflation can cause the tire to deteriorate quicker because they deflect more as it rolls, which builds up heat. Not to mention fuel economy. Over inflating is just as bad. Less tread contact on the ground.

For some good information google the following

tire load verses air pressure

As for pressure on the TV you should start at what the sticker recommends and increase pressure as the load on the tires increase.
The above will give you charts on what the different loads/pressure's should be However you should never exceed max air pressure in a tire.

Sorry but that statements needs a correction, TV pressure is what is indicated on the door jamb, you dont play with it. This is the pressure determined by the manufacturer for the best ride and the best performance of the truck, fully loaded or not. There is nothing to play with there.

The statement is correct your reply needs corrected But your are correct to a point that the decal is what the Vehicle manufacturer recommends But if you look at the tires they have a max PSI rating on them and the purpose for that is to adjust tire pressure to meet the load on the tire.. Suggest you read the charts

You can do what you want with the pressure , but i dont know for you but im not an engineer , however the real engineer at Ford per example are the one studying calculating nd determining the best pressure for a good ride, good handling, durability and supporting the maximum load for the applicationl.

So in theory yes you can crank the pressure to whats on the sidewall, but its not the right thing to do, the engineer have the knowledge and determine the best overall pressure.

Its fairly simple, the tire manuf. determine a press for a maximum load per tire, and this pressure will never change no matter where the tire is installed. Look closely at your tire and see what is written on them about the recommended pressure, you may discover something there. Few exception will show unloaded and loaded pressure option that you have for a given tire size .but hey to each is own

at the end who cares about the chart and whats on the sidewall. You should never overload your truck, and since you are not doing it, the pressure set by the truck manuf. is the one you should use..fully .loaded half loaded or unloaded .choosing a different pressure is playing engineer....its not recommended i would say but we live in a free world so crank them up as you please lol

Tire rack

Maximum Inflation Pressure

A tire's maximum inflation pressure is the highest "cold" inflation pressure that the tire is designed to contain. However the tire's maximum inflation pressure should only be used when called for on the vehicle's tire placard or in the vehicle's owners manual. It is also important to remember that the vehicle's recommended tire inflation pressure is always to be measured and set when the tire is "cold."

Therefore when checking and adjusting tire inflation pressures, the "right" inflation pressures are those provided by the vehicle manufacturer, not the "maximum" inflation pressure branded on the tire's sidewall. The vehicle manufacturer's pressure recommendation can be found on the vehicle's tire information placard label, as well as in the vehicle owner's manual.

Im not worry about the manufacturer pressure selection, im sure there,is a safety margin at the maximum load the truck can take, life can be complicate or not, its your call too choose

I don't think the engineers that came up with 35 psi for towing with a Silverado 1500 ever towed with it. My 6700 lb TT makes the back end feel like mush I tried it on one trip. Never again, I found running them at 45 psi handles great. The max tire psi is 51.

I forgot to mention I just run the rears at 45 because with the WD hitch there is no extra weight on the front.

Wait!
I thought I got my answer. At least on the TT tires. I'm gonna psi them to 50, they're max, no matter how hot or cold it is pre trip. Is that right? Last poster said set the back ones to 45? I'd like a consensus as this is important.

On TT go with sidewall max press taken cold all the time you cant go wrong, btw dont play with the pressure when hot, and if you forgot to check them cold they should be around 6 to 10 psi above max cold when hot
