Tire pressure question

I have a new Whitehawk that has Goodyear endurance tires. Trailer seems to pull and handle the road well.

Just checked tire pressure. The have 62 pounds of air in them cold. Max tire pressure on this tire is 65. Being at 62, is this an issue? Too low?

Thanks.

Steve

I ALWAYS keep my TT tires at the max shown on the sidewall (and my rear TV tires, too).

I'll bet your TT will pull better with the tires inflated to 65psi. At the very least, the sidewall will flex less so your tires will run cooler and cooler is better.

I have the same tires and agree with you about their handling. Just returned from a 2000 mile + trip. I also like the alum wheels my JF 26bh came with.Originally these were options I didn't even consider so luckily the rig I negotiated had them.

65psi is the recommended max cold air pressure for a loaded tt. My gvwr happens to be 7000 lbs. So if your traveling pretty heavy you might want to bring them up to 65 but if not maxed out you should be fine.

+1 to oldmanAZ. I always run at max sidewall as well.

That being said, running 3lbs under that will not likely hurt anything. Check the tire placard and see what the "recommended" tire pressure is. I would still run at max, but if you're at least at the "recommended" pressure, you're not likely to hurt anything.

I always top off, I try to keep them within 1 psi of the listed sideway pressures.

TT tires are not like car tires (P rated). More the side wall flexes, more heats builds up the tires and degrades them rapidly. Also ST tires only have a life expectancy of 3-5 years. The side walls weaken long before the tread wears out. There is a sticky in the General Jayco RV Chat forum discussing ST tires.

Unlike most if not all ST trailer tires the Goodyear Endurance do have a load inflation table (actually I should say I have never found any after exhaustive searches) that lists the recommended psi vs the weight they are carrying
RV Tire Safety: Goodyear Endurance ST tire info
find your size and what weight you are carrying on them, factor in a safety margin if you like at your discretion. No where does goodyear say you must use max inflation psi (outside of the fact that all tires must state on the tire max inflation psi), the psi is rated for weight as is the speed rating you can do the speed rating at the various inflation pressures vs load. Will they run cooler at higher psi than needed yes they will but they will also beat your trailer. Personally I would not have bought the Endurance tires if they were the same old but the load inflation table, the n speed rating tells me they built these more like a car/truck tire. Though we shall see how they work out after many more miles but so far so good. If they don't hold up well it will be LT tires for me from there on out. Just thought I would give them a try.

Could yust as well be, that you need even higher then 65 psi , to be save to laws of mother nature.
Needed pressure is not only load related but also speed related.
ST tires are calculated in maximum load for speed of 65m/h.
And this brings it all to the limits of savety.

I am able to calculate a save pressure with some resserve, but need real weight on seperate tires in the loading you go on tripp.
Also need the specifications of tires .
Need maximum load or loadindex.
Loadrating or pressure behind AT( mostl likely as you gave 65 psi)
But see if you find a speedcode ( probably N = 140km/87m/h) but ST is exeption so calculated for 65 m/h thoug N given on sidewall.

When I know all this, I can yudge if your 62 psi is to low.

If you cant give real weights( by weighing) we will have to do with the GAWR"s or GVWR and towbarweight of 10 to 15% of GVWR.

Look on your trailer for a yellow sticker with the recommended tire type and cold pressure.

No, you don't have to use the max inflation psi. The inflation table shows the minimum pressure for a given load and speed.

IMO, when you do inflate to the max, the sidewall flex is lower for a cooler tire, trailer sway due to sidewall flex is at the minimum, the tire's rolling resistance is at its minimum, and the tire is giving you the highest safety margin (both for weight and speed) it is capable of.

BTW, I have seen no evidence that running my OEM tires at 65psi or my GY Endurance tires at 80psi has 'beat my trailer' in anyway. YMMV.

This may work with original tires. I went from a load range C to E and 45psi to 80 psi so that sticker is worthless.

That may be, but to do that, one must weigh the trailer each and every time it leaves the driveway, and depends on whether a Jay Flight is carrying a 1/3 tank of water or full water, and also what the weight is on each tire.

Fact remains, I will not be going to the scales everytime I leave the driveway.
Therefore, I will air the tires up to 65psi as noted on the sidewall.
