Tires where to buy?

Where can I buy new tires inexpensive and who will put them on? Went to a town fair tire and they told me they won't put them on.

You want more than price. I haven't taken a newspaper for years, but when I did, tire companies were big advertisers in the Sports section. You want a retailer that will sell you the right tires for what you're putting them on and then provide proper installation and balancing, if that's necessary, and other services. Skimping on tires can be costly. It's a competitive business. There's not much to be saved anywhere. Even used tires wouldn't really be cheaper, all things considered. Just look for the sales, which are constant.

I've used a local Discount Tire retailer for at least the last 10 years (one in MI and two in AZ). They've had good prices, great service, and are nation wide (for the couple of times I had to have a tire replaced when away from home).

Most tire stores won't install a tire they didn't sell you for liability reasons. In this litigious society, I can't say I blame them.

I'd go to one of the major tire retailers. They have good prices and often have sales/rebates on certain brands. I really like Discount Tire. Good prices; excellent service; and nation-wide coverage. Had new Yokohama "P" rated tires put on my TV about a year ago. They have 3-ply sidewalls, instead of the standard 2-ply that most mfrs. use. Provides a much more stable ride while towing - and they were $100 less (each) than comparable "LT" rated tires.

Really like the tires, but they tended to leak air on my aluminum rims. I was having to add 5-10 lbs. of air every week. Took them into the Discount Tire where I bought them and explained the problem. They dismounted them, added rim lube and rim sealant, remounted & balanced them for me at NO CHARGE. (I normally runs $40/tire.) That was 2-1/2 weeks ago, and they haven't lost an ounce of air since!

I purchased 4 Maxxis 8008 8 ply tires from Discount Tires on the web with great price and quick delivery. Then had local tire shop mount them, no problem.
Then, at home I was admiring them and saw that my "new" tires were actually made 2 years ago. I complained to Discount and got nowhere except "send back for full refund." I figure it took 2 years off the life of my tires and I am not a happy camper with Discount. DO NOT BUY FROM DISCOUNT TIRES ON LINE! Local shops seem okay cause you can verify that the tires are recently produced.

Now, from all you tire experts.....am I overreacting on this? Are the tires still as good as tires produced last month or have they started 2 years of deterioration? Thanks,

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Not that I am a tire expert, but I totally agree with you. I would have sent them back as well.

A tires birth date means a lot. I have an example to prove it, and funny enough it was with Discount Tire also (who I actually really like and use for purchasing tires). I bought a set of used off road tires for a truck of mine, which were in very good condition as far as tread wear goes and there was absolutely no dry-rot or cracking or anything like that. But their born on date showed them to be 15 years old Discount Tire would not mount them to my wheels for me. They couldn't. Company policy. I dont remember their exact policy, but after a tire is so many years old (I believe it was 7) then they will no longer mount them, regardless of their condition.

So, no matter how good of shape the new tires you bought were, they were still already two years old.

I have never bought a set of new tires without looking at their date since then, and they have always been just a few months old give or take.

2 years old in a warehouse I don't think would be a issue, they weren't getting beat on by the sun and there was no load on them.im sure rubber deteriorates over time but it would have to be in pretty crappy condtions.

Two major tire retailers in my area and both of them told me they cannot mount them for me. They don't have the proper lift/garage clearance for the TT.

Am I seeing it right that they run about $100 per tire? Yikes!

Don't know exactly where you are located but our local Sam's Club has a sign saying they will mount any tire, no matter where it is purchased, for $10.00. This is to mount the tire on the wheel. I am not sure if they would install the tire/wheel assembly on the trailer.

I don't have a SAMs club. Only a Costco.

Lukenick, in your original post, you wanted to find inexpensive tires. In my humble opinion, this is one place you do not want to go cheap. You have received some good advice here. Next time you are close to Costco, stop and ak if they will mount tires bought elsewhere. You might even see if they can order you some good (Not cheap) tires.

Well I don't know how handy you are, but it isnt that hard to install a tire. Or 4.

Get them mounted and balanced by someone, and them install them yourself. It would be good practice anyway in case you ever get a blowout while traveling.

I don't know of any place that has a lift for travel trailers, but not saying there isn't.I worked at a garage for years and we would just have people drop the trailers near the garage and jack up the trailer one side at a time and do the tires.
